About the Role

Join a purpose-driven, high-performing team within Global Banking and Markets (GBM), Scotiabank’s leading Canadian Capital Markets and Investment Banking business with a growing platform in the US and Latin America. GBM provides a full range of investment banking, credit, and risk management products and services, including debt and equity financing, mergers & acquisitions, corporate banking, institutional equity sales, trading and research, fixed income products, derivatives, energy, foreign exchange, and precious metals. This role serves as primary Compliance Advisory coverage for the Equity Capital Markets (ECM) and Mergers & Acquisitions (M&A) businesses, with potential support for other CIB & Research Compliance areas and ad-hoc projects.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and drive a customer-focused culture to deepen client relationships and support the Bank’s customer-focused strategy.
  • Maintain active engagement with business leaders to influence first-line business practices.
  • Provide day-to-day and strategic guidance on regulatory requirements, best practices, conflicts of interest, cross-border activities, registrations, equity research, and supervision for ECM and M&A.
  • Ensure comprehensive policies, procedures, and monitoring activities are in place to comply with regulatory requirements and industry best practices.
  • Oversee the monitoring and identification of regulatory developments, including new laws, rules, and interpretations.
  • Participate in industry groups and trade associations to drive a consistent and collaborative compliance approach across jurisdictions.
  • Lead investigations into possible non-compliance and ensure escalation for remediation and corrective actions.
  • Collaborate with the Training Team and business stakeholders to develop and deliver compliance training programs.
  • Lead high-impact special projects with a results-driven focus.
  • Challenge quarterly/annual Compliance Risk Control Assessments and ensure action plans mitigate risk to acceptable levels.
  • Support Compliance testing, audits, regulatory exams, and inquiries for covered business areas.
  • Contribute to the development of Compliance-related Management Information (MI), such as Key Risk Indicators (KRIs), for oversight committees.
  • Partner with business areas, corporate functions, internal controls, and the broader Compliance team.
  • Align day-to-day activities and decisions with the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture.
  • Foster an environment that upholds Scotiabank’s Values and Code of Conduct while ensuring effective controls for operational, compliance, AML/ATF/sanctions, and conduct risk.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 10 years of Legal or Compliance experience supporting CIB, Capital Markets, and Research in the US and international markets.
  • Familiarity with Federal and State banking and securities laws, including SEC and FINRA regulations (e.g., SEC 10b-5, Rule 14e5, securities offering regulations under the ’33 Act, FINRA Rule 2241, Global Research Settlement, and information barriers).
  • Experience with Federal Reserve Bank Regulations relating to corporate lending activities.
  • Ability to operate and coordinate programs across large, matrixed organizations.
  • Experience developing compliance policies and procedures, delivering training, conducting risk assessments, and responding to regulatory inquiries.
  • Sound judgment in identifying and escalating risks to senior management.
  • Strong analytical, investigative, and strategic-thinking skills.
  • Proven leadership in high-performance teams.
  • Excellent organizational, communication (oral and written), and interpersonal skills with keen attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet stringent deadlines.
  • Self-motivated with strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • College degree required; postgraduate degree (JD or MBA) preferred.
  • High level of integrity; securities licenses (e.g., Series 7/79) preferred but not required.

Schedule

Hybrid office-based environment; non-standard hours are common. Limited domestic and international travel may be required.
