About the role

The attorney will provide support for the Discover Network on the US Commercial and Product legal team with a focus on merchant relationships. The ideal candidate should have expertise in commercial contracting. This position will have responsibility for:

  • Providing expert counsel and strategic guidance across a critical spectrum of areas impacting commercial relationships, including commercial contracting and risk identification and mitigation
  • Negotiating, drafting, and guiding implementation of commercial agreements, working in close collaboration with legal and business colleagues and other subject matter experts
  • Supporting credit, fintech and payment innovation related new product initiatives and innovation across the Discover Network
  • Supporting the development and maintenance of competitive rule sets for the Discover Network
  • Identifying and supporting process improvements to promote agility in legal and related business operations, including contract template improvements
  • Partnering collaboratively with other internal counsel and business teams across the enterprise
  • Partnering with Risk and Compliance teams to ensure comprehensive support

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor from an accredited law school
  • Active member in good standing of at least one state bar
  • At least 8 years of experience in a law firm, in-house legal department, or a combination

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of experience in a law firm, in-house legal department, or a combination
  • Merchant and/or payment network experience
