About the Role
We’re looking for a sharp, transformation-minded Director of Accounts Payable to take the helm of our AP team. In this role, you’ll blend hands-on operational leadership with big-picture strategy, championing a high-performing team, leveraging automation to modernize systems, and building strong cross-functional bridges with Procurement, Accounting, and Treasury.
Responsibilities
- Drive AP Strategy & Scale: Establish the vision, operating model, and strategic priorities for the Accounts Payable function to support a rapidly growing organization.
- Lead & Champion the Team: Directly lead, coach, and develop a high-performing AP team (2–4 direct reports), fostering a culture of continuous improvement, accountability, and outstanding service.
- Manage End-to-End Operations: Oversee the accurate, timely processing of all PO- and non-PO-backed invoices, payment execution, month-end close responsibilities (accruals, reconciliations, cutoffs), departmental workload prioritization, and serve as a key contact for audits.
- Optimize Systems & Processes: Drive ongoing process improvements, lead AP system transformations, and leverage automation technology to boost operational efficiency and scalability.
- Build Cross-Functional Partnerships: Collaborate closely with Procurement, Treasury, Accounting, IT, and internal business leaders to resolve issues, strengthen internal controls, and streamline the procure-to-pay cycle.
- Govern Vendor Relationships: Own vendor master governance, ensure data integrity, resolve disputes promptly, and partner with stakeholders to maintain excellent vendor relations.
- Ensure Compliance & Control: Maintain a rock-solid internal control environment (including segregation of duties) and ensure full compliance with AP-related tax and regulatory requirements (e.g., 1099 reporting, unclaimed property).
- Deliver Insights & Guidance: Track KPIs, present AP performance metrics, and serve as the go-to functional expert advising senior leadership on policy, system upgrades, and operational risk.
Requirements
- 10+ years of total AP experience with 4+ years in a leadership/management role.
- Background in omni-channel retail, manufacturing, or distribution environments.
- Proven, hands-on experience leading AP system transformations and implementing automation.
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Accounting, or a related field.
- Excellent problem-solving, decision-making, and communication skills, with a track record of building strong working relationships across an organization.
- A self-starter mindset with the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity or experience with JD Edwards and RetailPro systems.
