Director Accounting Quality Assurance/Quality Control
About Crew Finance
We are the financial backbone for startups in Consumer, Technology, and SaaS — some of the brightest emerging brands navigating the chaos of high growth. Based in Santa Monica with crewmates spread coast to coast, we don't just keep the books. We help founders make sense of their numbers, build financial infrastructure that scales, and stay focused on what matters most: the business.
The Role
We're looking for a Director of Accounting Quality Assurance — emphasis on accounting. This is not a software QA role, a test engineering role, or anything adjacent to code. This role is about the integrity of financial statements, the precision of balance sheet reconciliations, the rigor of month-end closes, and the kind of meticulous review that makes clients sleep at night. You'll be the firm's standard-bearer: designing the QA/QC framework that governs our accounting deliverables, leading cleanup efforts when client books are in rough shape, and building the processes that prevent the mess in the first place. This is a leadership role — you'll mentor and develop team members, partner closely with controllers and client-facing teams, and serve as the internal authority on complex accounting questions.
What You'll Own & Improve
ACCOUNTING QUALITY ASSURANCE & CONTROL
Design and maintain firm-wide QA/QC standards for all accounting deliverables — financial statements, reconciliations, journal entries, and supporting documentation
Establish quality metrics that track error rates, rework, and delivery timeliness across client engagements
Conduct regular file audits to verify accuracy, GAAP compliance, and alignment with firm standards
Flag systemic issues before they become client problems
CLEANUP & REMEDIATION
Lead complex cleanup projects — account reconciliations, reclassifications, historical corrections, prior-period true-ups
Diagnose root causes of accounting errors and implement corrective actions that stick
Transition remediated accounts into steady-state operations with the client team
Communicate findings clearly to founders and leadership — no jargon, no hedging
PROCESS IMPROVEMENT & STANDARDIZATION
Evaluate existing accounting workflows and build improvements that increase accuracy without sacrificing speed
Develop standardized procedures, templates, and checklists for common accounting scenarios
Train accounting teams on new standards, technical guidance, and firm expectations
Support capacity planning and resource alignment as the firm grows
LEADERSHIP & TEAM DEVELOPMENT
Lead, mentor, and grow the QA/QC and cleanup team
Provide technical coaching on accounting standards — GAAP, revenue recognition, inventory, COGS — to teammates at all levels
Champion a culture where high-quality output is the expectation, not the exception
CROSS-FUNCTIONAL COLLABORATION
Partner with controllers, client service leads, and firm leadership on quality issues and risk
Serve as subject matter expert on complex accounting questions — the person people bring the hard stuff to
Support new client onboarding through initial financial assessments and cleanup scoping
What You Bring
CPA required — this is a non-negotiable for a role built on accounting precision
10+ years of progressive accounting experience in a client services, outsourced accounting, or professional services environment
Deep technical knowledge: US GAAP, revenue recognition, COGS, inventory, costing — you're the one colleagues call when they're stuck
Comfortable with QuickBooks Online, NetSuite, Bill.com, Gusto, and Shopify (or willing to learn quickly)
Experience with startup businesses — you understand the startup accounting lifecycle and how fast things can change
Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) experience is required — many of our clients are in this world
A systems thinker who builds process that scales, not workarounds that linger
Strong communicator — you can translate accounting complexity into plain language for a founder who didn't go to business school
Able to manage multiple client engagements simultaneously without dropping the anchor
High ownership mentality: if something's broken, you fix it; if something's unclear, you clarify it
Why Crew
Working fractionally means you'll never be bored. You'll encounter a wide range of industries, business models, and accounting challenges — and you'll build expertise faster than you would in any single-client role.
We care deeply about doing the work right. That's why this role exists. And we're building the kind of firm where quality isn't just a checkbox — it's the whole point.
If you're ready to bring your accounting expertise to a team that takes the craft seriously, we'd love to talk.
