About the Role

Gesher Human Services is a bridge to hope and opportunity for people at work, at home, and in the community. The Direct Support Professional Specialist blends direct participant support with critical administrative and coordination responsibilities that keep Community Inclusion programs running smoothly. In addition to supporting individuals with disabilities in community-based activities, this role works closely with Navigators/Case Managers/Supervisors to manage schedules, documentation, compliance tracking, and communication with families, guardians, and external partners. The Specialist serves as an organizational anchor—ensuring accurate records, reliable staffing coverage, and strong operational flow so participants and staff can focus on what matters most.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalency required; two-years of college preferred.
  • 21+ years of age.
  • 3-4 years related work experience serving individuals with disabilities preferred.
  • Criminal background must meet funding source requirements.
  • Reliable transportation and valid Michigan driver’s license.
  • Driving record must be approved by Agency insurance carrier.
  • Complete all assigned trainings including but not limited to CPR, First Aid, and Recipient Rights.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to communicate clearly and professionally with participants and staff.
  • Composition skills sufficient to prepare required documentation.
  • Fluency in American Sign Language is a plus.
  • Basic computer skills.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, implement, and supervise activities that promote a healthy, active, and socially integrated lifestyle for people with disabilities in employment, volunteer, recreation, and facility settings.
  • Assist participants with personal care, hygiene, and grooming, including physical assistance in transferring and mobility.
  • Provide support and training based on goals in service plans.
  • Supervise and maintain the safety of participants.
  • Transport participants using Agency van or own vehicle.
  • Complete daily reports and respond to email using Agency computers.
  • Develop and distribute staff and participant schedules.
  • Monitor and track program participant attendance and assigned staff documentation.
  • Communicate with external agencies, families, guardians, program participants, and internal departments by phone or email to obtain necessary documents needed for compliance and billing.
  • Maintain site info sheets, equipment, and program supply inventory.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Serve on Agency committee(s) as appointed.

Working Conditions

Environmental Conditions

  • Moderate noise (i.e., business office with computers, phone, and printers, light traffic).
  • Ability to work in a confined area.
  • Ability to sit at a computer terminal for an extended period.

Physical Requirements

  • Regularly required to stand, sit, talk, hear, and use hands and fingers to operate a computer and telephone keyboard.
  • Required to reach, stoop, kneel to install computer equipment.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision requirements due to computer work.
  • Light to moderate lifting is required.

Pay

This position is non-exempt and eligible for overtime pay in accordance with the Federal Fair Labor Standards Act.
