About the Role

Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) provide assistance and instruction to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) to help them achieve a more comfortable level of independence. DSPs support clients across a wide range of tasks, including transportation, personal care, cooking, and cleaning.

Responsibilities

  • Report any instances of suspected abuse, neglect, or exploitation.
  • Assist clients with activities such as personal hygiene, eating, meal preparation, dressing, toileting, exercise, and ambulation.
  • Maintain current and accurate charting and daily documentation records (tracking sheets, Learning Logs, etc.).
  • Facilitate residents' inclusion in community experiences and activities.
  • Assist with ambulation and transfers using proper techniques and equipment as needed.
  • Provide personal care tasks, including hygiene, grooming, and feeding.
  • Establish a secure, positive environment that nurtures residents' needs, self-expression, and goals.
  • Ensure client safety and maintain a safe environment.
  • Encourage self-help activities and report changes in client's condition or family situation.
  • Perform housekeeping duties and accompany clients to scheduled appointments.
  • Transport clients or run errands for clients.
  • Assist individuals with behavior plans.
  • Maintain consistent attendance and punctuality for scheduled shifts.
  • Comply with facility policies and procedures and maintain knowledge of residents' requirements.
  • Advance residents' decision-making, productivity, and participation in a range of activities.
  • Promote independence in daily activities, such as work, learning, and leisure.
  • Follow principles of infection control and Universal Precautions.

Requirements

  • High school degree or GED required.
  • Valid Georgia Driver's license with at least three (3) years of driving experience.
  • Own a reliable vehicle and maintain at least liability vehicle insurance coverage.
  • Pass a criminal background check and pre-employment physical, drug screen, and TB test.
  • 18 years of age or older.
  • Ability to work in group homes or home-like settings.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Skills

  • Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds, including pushing and pulling adult-sized wheelchairs (electric and manual).
  • Frequent bending, stooping, lifting, pushing, pulling, reaching, and walking for long periods.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting.
  • Good driving record.
