Direct Support Assistant
Duties Description
Office for People With Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) prioritizes the health and safety of 128,000 individuals with developmental disabilities. As a Direct Support Assistant (DSA), you will assist individuals in leading richer lives. Duties include:
- Providing supports and services.
- Advocating, encouraging, guiding, and teaching individuals in expressing personal choices.
- Ensuring community integration.
- Assisting with personal hygiene care, toileting, dining, dressing, meal preparation, lifts, and transfers.
- Helping individuals participate in games and recreational programs.
- Coaching and encouraging individuals to develop daily living skills.
- Providing a clean, safe, and comfortable environment.
- Working with other staff to carry out care plans and record care plans.
- Administering medication in accordance with special instructions.
Minimum Qualifications
- A high school diploma or equivalent.
- A valid New York State driver’s license.
- To maintain a valid driver’s license throughout employment.
- To meet physical and agility standards.
Additional Comments
This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). HELPS Program titles may be filled via a non-competitive appointment. Employees hired under NY HELPS are expected to have their permanent non-competitive employment status converted to permanent competitive status within one year of permanent appointment. Starting salary reflects the increased hiring salary and geographic pay differential. For CSEA positions, Local Bidding Agreements will be honored. Preference will be given to OPWDD employees impacted by closures. Employees on long-term leave must be able to report to work within fourteen (14) days and be able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
