Direct Care Worker II

About the role

The Department of Developmental Services (DDS) seeks a caring and compassionate Direct Care Worker II (DSW II) committed to building meaningful relationships to provide outstanding care and service. The DSW II provides direct care services and aid to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities by addressing their daily living needs and skills necessary for community life.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in implementing habilitative, behavioral, and recreational programs; perform related cooking and housekeeping duties
  • Dispense medications in accordance with applicable laws, rules, and regulations
  • Communicate with individuals served in a manner that promotes their growth, human rights, and community integration
  • Assist, instruct, and support individuals in understanding and exercising their rights to their fullest potential
  • Report all abuse and neglect as a mandatory reporter to the residential supervisor and Director of Residential Support per regulations; complete required paperwork
  • May drive individuals to work, appointments, and recreational outings
  • Perform crisis intervention and maintain confidential records of individuals
  • Act as shift supervisor: monitor DSW I staff to ensure advocacy and respect for individuals; provide daily supervision and training; implement services ensuring safety and health; observe and report health-related issues; make staff assignments; assist in evaluations of DSW I staff
  • Must be able to lift, carry, push, or pull heavy objects

Required Qualifications

  • Knowledge of comprehensive service needs of persons with developmental/intellectual disabilities and their families/guardians
  • Ability to give clear written or verbal instructions and plan, assign, and coordinate the activities of others

Agency Requirements

  • Current and valid Class D Motor Vehicle Operator’s License
  • Pass the Medication Administration Program (MAP) certification
  • Acquire and maintain Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid (FA) certification after completing training

Minimum Entrance Requirements

  • At least one year of full-time or equivalent part-time experience providing direct support services to persons with developmental/intellectual, emotional, or physical disabilities
  • OR an equivalent combination of required experience and substitutions below

Substitutions

An Associate’s degree or higher with a major in a human services field (e.g., sociology, special education, psychology, rehabilitation counseling, occupational therapy, physical therapy) may substitute for the required experience.

Schedule

  • Full-time, 40 hours per week
  • Shift: 3:00 PM – 11:30 PM
  • Days off: Friday and Saturday
  • Position may require flexibility in schedule and mandatory overtime when circumstances dictate
  • Position is designated as an “EMERGENCY” position; selected applicant may be required to report to work during a state of emergency declared by the Governor
