About the role

Transdev in Brownsville, TX is seeking an experienced Diesel Technician to bolster our team. This role demands expertise in diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining automotive engines across various vehicles and equipment. As a Diesel Technician, you'll play a crucial role in ensuring safety, efficiency, and longevity for our assets. Class A or B CDL with passenger and air brake endorsement required (or expected within 3 months of hire).

Pay

Competitive compensation package of minimum $21.00 – maximum $26.25 per hour. $2.00 per hour increase once CDL with endorsements is obtained.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure vehicles are maintained and safe for our customers by performing limited repairs with moderate supervision on basic and advanced maintenance such as replacement of light bulbs, fuses, lenses, wiper blades, belts, hoses, batteries, checking fluid levels, changing fluids and filters, and lubricating components.
  • Perform mechanical repairs under moderate supervision including the repair of brakes and brake inspections, engine tune-ups, suspensions, drive trains, transmission clutches, and other repairs.
  • Maintain records of all maintenance work completed on vehicles including parts and supplies used.
  • Ensure that work orders are completed properly and accurately.
  • Maintain parts usage records and order repair parts from designated suppliers.
  • Assist Tech III with preventative maintenance (PM’s), safety maintenance inspections, and annual maintenance inspections at prescribed intervals of time and usage.
  • Remove and replace engine, transmission, and differential assemblies with Maintenance Technician III supervision.
  • Diagnose and perform accurately all phases of vehicle and equipment repair under moderate supervision.
  • Notify supervisor of potentially dangerous equipment and corrective action taken.
  • Evaluate completed work prior to release and seek approval where required.
  • Assist with road calls and emergency services as necessary.
  • Repair and maintain all shop equipment.
  • Clean vehicles as requested or required.
  • Other responsibilities as requested or required.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent preferred; vocational or technical certification in vehicle repair (preferred).
  • Class A or B CDL with passenger and air brake endorsement required (or expected within 3 months of hire).
  • ASE Certification preferred. Must participate in ASE testing program (expected to have 2 ASE certifications within 6 months of hire).
  • Intermediate mechanical aptitude and 3 years of automotive or diesel repair experience (preferred) or equivalent education and experience.
  • Adhere to standards set by state DOT for motor vehicle inspections and safety standards.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Intermediate problem-solving ability.
  • Intermediate computer skills.
  • Comfortable using hand tools.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Maintain an organized shop and clean work environment.
  • Regular, predictable, full attendance is an essential function of the job.
  • Possess adequate mechanic tool inventory to complete all assigned duties and maintain it in a clean and safe manner.
  • Subject to a DOT physical exam and DOT drug testing. DOT Regulation 49 CFR Part 40 does not authorize the use of Schedule I drugs, including marijuana, for any reason.

Physical Requirements

The essential functions of this position require the ability to:

  • Work outside in varying temperature, weather, and humidity conditions—100% of the job is performed outside, work alone, and in remote locations.
  • Sit for extended periods (up to 6–8 hours per day); frequently walk for long distances and on possible sloped ground or slippery and uneven surfaces.
  • Push and pull objects, occasionally throughout the workday; lift material weighing up to 50 lbs. with or without assistance; occasionally bend, kneel, or crouch to files or equipment stored at ground level.
  • Withstand heavy traffic areas while performing the duties of the job; tolerate exposure to considerable amounts of dust, vehicle fumes, and noise.
