About the role
As a Locomotive Mechanic at Watco, you will inspect, repair, and maintain locomotives in accordance with company policies and FRA regulations, performing mechanical-related maintenance as required.
Responsibilities
- Provide customer service consistent with company expectations
- Use gauges and testing equipment properly
- Complete written FRA reports for mechanic job duties
- Obtain a qualified Service Engineer certificate for FRA inspections and regulations
- Interpret instructions in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form
- Identify issues by observing mechanical devices in operation
- Dismantle devices using hoists, cranes, hand tools, and power tools to remove, repair, or replace defective parts
- Record hour meter readings for inspections and preventative maintenance repair
- Check locomotives for air-fuel, oil, water, and exhaust leaks; clean as needed
- Inspect safety equipment and secure bolts and pins
- Clean and lubricate screens, strainers, and traps
- Inspect locomotives for defects, damage, or leaks according to company standards
- Perform main bearing checks and air brake tests according to specifications
- Perform emergency repairs and re-railing of railroad rolling stock
- Inspect wheels according to the wheel inspection report
- Use welders, torches, hammers, jacks, pneumatic tools, hand tools, forklifts, and cranes
Requirements
- Must pass or obtain all required reporting, testing, and certifications for troubleshooting and repair of motors, generators, and transformers
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and be insurable by the company insurance provider
- Have or be able to obtain a Class B CDL
- Ability to become a qualified Service Engineer according to FRA regulations
- Able to complete a three-year Railroad Apprenticeship, if required
