Diesel Mechanic Technician

About the role

Midwest Transit Equipment seeks a Full Time Diesel Mechanic for their Gary, IN location. This position combines in-house tech responsibilities with field service technician duties, traveling to customers as needed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Servicing of gasoline and diesel powered buses from basic maintenance to full vehicle service
• Diagnosing mechanical defects and implementing a preventive maintenance program
• Major overhaul of engines and transmissions
• Service and maintain brakes, air compressors, fuel systems, ignitions, HVAC systems, and wheelchair lifts
• Service and maintain vehicle air conditioning units
• Inspecting and repairing school buses according to DOT requirements
• Keeping records of time and materials used
• Utilizing and maintaining a working knowledge of all manufacturer diagnostic software and portals, such as Navistar
• Working knowledge of all products serviced by the company, including Navistar IC Bus and supplier products

Requirements

• 4+ years of medium duty bus experience, with an International Truck/Bus preference
• 100% certification for all manufacturer training requirements, including Cummins, Navistar, and Braun
• Own set of tools
• Knowledge of pupil transportation codes and laws, including DOT inspections
• CDL Class B license with air brake endorsement
• A/C certification
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to provide exemplary customer service
• Ability to work independently and meet deadlines
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
