About the role
Midwest Transit Equipment seeks a Full Time Diesel Mechanic for their Gary, IN location. This position combines in-house tech responsibilities with field service technician duties, traveling to customers as needed.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Servicing of gasoline and diesel powered buses from basic maintenance to full vehicle service
- Diagnosing mechanical defects and implementing a preventive maintenance program
- Major overhaul of engines and transmissions
- Service and maintain brakes, air compressors, fuel systems, ignitions, HVAC systems, and wheelchair lifts
- Service and maintain vehicle air conditioning units
- Inspecting and repairing school buses according to DOT requirements
- Keeping records of time and materials used
- Utilizing and maintaining a working knowledge of all manufacturer diagnostic software and portals, such as Navistar
- Working knowledge of all products serviced by the company, including Navistar IC Bus and supplier products
Requirements
- 4+ years of medium duty bus experience, with an International Truck/Bus preference
- 100% certification for all manufacturer training requirements, including Cummins, Navistar, and Braun
- Own set of tools
- Knowledge of pupil transportation codes and laws, including DOT inspections
- CDL Class B license with air brake endorsement
- A/C certification
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to provide exemplary customer service
- Ability to work independently and meet deadlines
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
