About the Role

The Heavy Equipment Mechanic diagnoses, maintains, repairs, and services a wide variety of fleet vehicles, equipment, and specialized vehicles under general supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose, perform maintenance, and repair on light, medium, and heavy vehicles and equipment.
  • Service vehicles with fuel, oil, and coolant; perform preventive maintenance by checking items such as battery condition, tire air pressure, coolant and oil levels, and hydraulic and brake fluid levels.
  • Perform skilled repair and maintenance on gasoline-powered equipment and vehicles, including replacing bearings, axle seals, brake master cylinders, resurfacing brake drums and rotors, etc.
  • Repair, overhaul, replace, and rebuild engines and various components of vehicles and equipment.
  • Diagnose, maintain, and repair hydraulic systems.
  • Coordinate with administration and other trades to complete projects/work orders efficiently.
  • Conduct installation and removal of auxiliary equipment.
  • Respond to emergencies to resolve immediate safety concerns.
  • Maintain tools and equipment to ensure availability in safe operating condition.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • At least five years of related experience.
  • Valid state driver’s license.
  • Must successfully pass a federal, state, or local government background investigation.

Skills

  • Ability to operate and instruct on the proper use of light, medium, and heavy vehicles and equipment.
  • Ability to diagnose vehicle and equipment failures using trade knowledge and diagnostic equipment.
  • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
  • Ability to operate, calibrate, tune, and adjust equipment such as motor vehicles, motorized equipment, mechanic tools, drill press, welder, forklift, hydraulic press, battery tester, steam cleaner, and power washer.
  • Ability to explain, demonstrate, and clarify procedures to others within established policies and standards.
  • Basic arithmetic skills: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, and decimals.
  • Ability to recognize and identify characteristics of colors, odors, shapes, sounds, and textures to diagnose equipment conditions and malfunctions.
  • Proficiency in using computers to document work, update work order status, and perform parts requests.

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods of standing, bending, reaching, and working with hands.
  • Occasional exposure to loud noises.
  • Ability to lift up to 75 pounds at times.
  • Ability to stand, walk, and reach with arms and hands as necessary for positioning and safety.
  • Ability to hear and see to meet safety requirements.
  • Occasional exposure to heat, cold, noise, dust, dirt, and chemicals.
