Diesel Mechanic

About the role

This position provides mechanical, repair, maintenance, and related services to customers. The Diesel Mechanic must understand routine and complex truck and trailer repair processes, maintenance tasks, shop techniques, parts, materials, and basic shop equipment operation. The role reports to the Shop Supervisor but may receive specific assignments from a lead mechanic or technician. Efficiency in work directly impacts company profitability by minimizing wasted time, parts, materials, and rework.

Responsibilities

• Assist Mechanics with complex mechanical truck and trailer service, maintenance, and repairs on all makes and models, including engine, electrical, drive train, tire, steering, suspension, and refrigeration systems.
• Perform vehicle and trailer inspections according to DOT standards and address identified deficiencies.
• Conduct routine and complex fluid and filter checks and replacements according to manufacturer specifications and company standards.
• Perform routine and complex electrical inspections, replacements (fuses, bulbs, batteries), and repairs.
• Troubleshoot, repair, and replace components for engine, electrical, wheel, tire, and axle systems on all makes and models of trucks and trailers.
• Inform the Supervisor of any problems or difficulties encountered during repairs or maintenance.
• Assist the Shop Supervisor with training other mechanics and technical staff.
• Manage stock and equipment inventories, including physical counts and reorder notifications.
• Notify the Shop Supervisor promptly when non-stock parts are needed to avoid job delays.
• Cover shop operations during the Shop Supervisor’s absence, if required.
• Complete all necessary paperwork and reports accurately and submit them in a timely manner.
• Maintain assigned company tools, including a company-issued tablet, in good condition.
• Use shop software daily to create jobs, track time, log parts used, and enter detailed notes.

Requirements

• Valid current Iowa driver’s license with the ability to drive all types of trucks, including manual transmissions.
• Two to five years of experience with diesel truck repair (preference for 3–5 years).
• Ability to lift up to 100 lbs.
• Professional demeanor and ability to represent the company courteously and respectfully.
• Strong mechanical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to read technical diagrams and manuals.
• Ability to write work orders.
• Pass a pre-employment drug test and submit to random drug/alcohol testing if selected (at no cost to the employee).
