About the role
The Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic role with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) offers a chance to keep essential equipment running safely and smoothly. This position allows you to build strong mechanical skills while supporting crews that maintain our essential fleet in Westmoreland County.
Responsibilities
- Equipment Repair: Diagnose mechanical issues, repair parts, and overhaul vehicles and construction equipment
- Preventative Maintenance: Inspect components, perform tune-ups, service systems, and complete scheduled maintenance tasks
- State Inspections: Conduct official safety and emissions inspections and complete all required documentation
- Diagnostics Work: Identify equipment problems using proper tools and procedures and determine needed repairs
- Safety Practices: Maintain a clean and safe work area, follow safety procedures, and report injuries or hazards
- Field Support: Make routine adjustments, demonstrate repair methods, assist other mechanics, and maintain equipment records
Qualifications
- Minimum Experience and Training Requirements: Successful completion of the commonwealth’s Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee program; or Two years of journey level mechanic experience in the diagnosis and repair of automobiles, heavy trucks, or construction equipment, which includes one year of experience in the diagnosis and repair of diesel vehicles or equipment; or An equivalent combination of experience and training.
- Special Requirements: This position requires possession of an active Pennsylvania Class A or B Commercial Driver's License with the Air Brake Restriction (L) and Manual Transmission Restriction (E) removed, or equivalent. This position requires possession of an active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations on the first day of employment. This position requires an active Pennsylvania Class 1, Class 4, or Class 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification on the first day of employment.
- Additional Requirements: This position requires operation of vehicles or equipment with a manual transmission. Employees may be required to obtain and maintain CDL endorsements and certifications necessary to operate specific pieces of equipment. All employees must obtain an active certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in the operation of heavy trucks and loaders within the probationary period. This position is subject to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Regulations. You must be able to perform essential job functions.
