Position Overview

The Dialysis Nurse (LPN) is responsible for the delivery of care to patients of all ages with end stage renal disease, from pediatric to geriatric, in the Nephrology Unit and supervising the dialysis team in accordance with their level of training and patients’ acuity. All responsibilities completed in this role will be completed under the direct supervision of the Dialysis Nurse (RN).

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the preparation of the delivery system, dialysate bath, and dialyzer and confirm that all mandatory alarm tests on the dialyzer and equipment are performed.
  • Serve as a supervisor for dialysis technicians in the performance of dialysis from start to finish, monitor patient reaction to treatment and performance of the dialysis machines, and demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the mechanics of dialysis.
  • Assess, prepare, and cannulate a patient’s vascular access (including needle insertion in arteriovenous fistula or grafts for aseptic connection with dialysis equipment).
  • Utilize sterile techniques to assess the dialysis catheter exit site and to apply dressing on the patient’s vascular access (dialysis catheter, arteriovenous access) per protocols.
  • Conduct post dialysis assessment and patient discharge by evaluating treatment, documenting medication administration utilizing the appropriate protocols, assessing condition of vascular access, discharging the patient when vital signs are stable, and documenting and recording patient treatment data.
  • Administer medication within their professional scope of practice (LPN).

Qualifications

  • Must have and maintain a current, valid and unencumbered state LPN license.
  • One (1) to three (3) years’ experience providing nursing care to patients in acute dialysis preferred.
  • Current, valid CPR certification required.
