About the role
Diagnostic Medical Sonographer II responsible for reviewing the Physician Order and reason for exam, preparing patients, and performing a variety of specialized medical ultrasound examinations/procedures to obtain high-quality images for diagnostic interpretation in accordance with departmental protocols. Performs vascular exams under the direct supervision of an RVT or Radiologist and may assist physicians with ultrasound-guided procedures. Works closely with Ultrasound leadership and Radiologists, performing technical procedures that require independent judgment, integrity, and initiative.
Responsibilities
- Interpret physician's orders and scan areas of the body using proper positioning techniques.
- Demonstrate the ability to scan patients, providing high-quality images that meet department protocols.
- Prepare the sterile field and assist physicians with procedures such as biopsies, cyst punctures, and drainage of abscesses.
- Relay preliminary reports from the radiologist to physicians or nursing units.
- Initiate records for all patients undergoing ultrasound scanning, including patient personal data and test ordered.
- Operate ultrasonic scanners and workstations.
- Provide physical comfort and emotional support for patients.
- Transport patients to the Radiology Department and assist patients from wheelchairs and stretchers to scanning tables.
- Provide information to nursing units about correct patient preparation and coordinate scanning with other tests.
- Contact physicians' offices to clarify orders and obtain additional information.
- Coordinate with outreach hospital personnel to obtain information and clarify schedules.
- Perform duties within established ultrasound testing practices/procedures under the direction of the Radiologist.
- Submit reporting of in- and outpatient scans to provide accurate data on test volume and trends for future planning.
- Attend mandatory meetings and in-services as required by the Hospital and/or Department of Radiology.
- Clean and maintain equipment.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of ultrasound scanning trends.
- Under the supervision of the Radiologist and an RVT, perform vascular exams such as venous, peripheral arterial, carotid, and mappings.
Requirements
- Completion of an accredited Medical Sonography program.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Registered by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) with certification in ABD or OB/GYN and Vascular OR RVT Registry-eligible with certification within one year of hire.
- One year as a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer is preferred.
- Willing to train in Breast Imaging.
Skills
- In-depth knowledge of cross-sectional anatomy.
- Ability to produce and evaluate quality images.
- In-depth knowledge of cross-section anatomy, including abdomen, gynecology, superficial parts, and vascular.
- Stays current in all registry modalities (RDMS, RVT).
- Excellent customer service orientation skills to deal effectively with various levels of hospital personnel, outside customers, and community groups.
