Diagnostic Medical Physicists

About the Role

Diagnostic medical physicists (also referred to as medical physicists, diagnostic physicists, or physicists) at OU Health are qualified experts in medical physics as defined by the American College of Radiology, the American Association of Physicists in Medicine, and other related professional organizations. They provide essential administrative, organizational, structural, and technical expertise to ensure hospitals and clinics function smoothly, safely, and at state-of-the-art technical and clinical levels in a complex environment. Their primary expertise lies in nuclear medicine and diagnostic imaging, including X-ray, CT, MRI, mammography, and ultrasound.

Responsibilities

• Develop or review policies and procedures in diagnostic radiology and nuclear medicine.
• Develop or assist with quality control procedures and direct the quality control program when needed.
• Perform or oversee quality procedures beyond the qualifications of a Quality Control Technologist, typically handled by medical physicists or designated assistants.
• Provide recommendations and technical information for new equipment selection, layout, and installation.
• Conduct acceptance testing for installations, major repairs, or upgrades of imaging or radiopharmaceutical assay equipment.
• Collaborate with maintenance personnel or vendors to ensure proper repair, calibration, and preventative maintenance of equipment.
• Troubleshoot problems with imaging or radiopharmaceutical assay equipment.
• Assist in implementing new high-technology equipment or clinical procedures.
• Ensure compliance with radiation safety and regulatory requirements during routine operations.
• Investigate excessive radiation exposure to patients, technologists, or physicians.
• Provide information on radiation dose or exposure to patients and determine patient radiation dosimetry when needed.
• Investigate cases of significant or excessive radiation dose.
• Assist with preparation for external or internal inspections, including reviews of quality control programs and radiation safety.
• Provide radiation safety expertise for hospital/clinic areas or procedures, including shielding verification for new facilities, room use changes, or equipment relocation.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Education: PhD in Diagnostic Medical Physics and successful completion of an Imaging Physics residency program.

Experience: 0 - 3 years in a Diagnostic Medical Physics, Nuclear Medicine Medical Physics, or Radiation Therapy Medical Physics position.

Certification: Board Certified or board eligible by the American College of Radiology (ABR).
