About the Role

The itinerant teacher is a trained, certified teacher of the deaf and hard-of-hearing. This specialist assesses classroom performance, develops programming, provides instruction, and addresses the needs of hearing-impaired children. The position services students within the SASED Self-Contained Program and mainstream classrooms.

Responsibilities

Instructional Responsibilities

  • Provide direct instructional service to students eligible for the itinerant program.
  • Participate in determining specific goals for direct service.
  • Implement individual educational plans (IEPs).
  • Informally and formally assess student progress on an ongoing basis, including:
    • Accomplishment of IEP goals
    • Classroom performance
  • Monitor and assist in implementing support services such as notetakers, interpreters, and study guides.

Specialized Knowledge

  • Hearing aids
  • Auditory trainers
  • Sign language
  • Interpretation of audiograms
  • Aural rehabilitation
  • Speechreading
  • Formal and informal assessment tools

Professional Responsibilities

  • Establish and maintain ongoing communication to meet the needs of itinerant students, including:
    • Frequent communication with parents
    • Regular contact with school staff
    • Regular contact with DWC audiologists and consultants
  • Interpret evaluation and progress data for personnel and parents at conferences, annual reviews, and staffings.
  • Maintain punctuality, good attendance, and timely completion of assigned responsibilities.
  • Keep appropriate and accurate records.
  • Attend required staff meetings.
  • Foster a positive working atmosphere with district staff to benefit hearing-impaired students.
  • Review and update students' files to correct inappropriate information.
  • Use organizational skills and flexibility to establish an effective schedule.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Complete tasks efficiently to maximize service to hearing-impaired students.

Consultative Responsibilities

  • Serve as a contact for local districts and joint agreements regarding hearing loss.
  • Provide general information about hearing loss.
  • Conduct inservice training on hearing impairment for staff and students.
  • Assist in the referral process to DWC as appropriate.
  • Provide inservice training for local districts and joint agreements regarding students needing itinerant services.
  • Educate school staff and peers about specific students' hearing loss and needs.
  • Offer ongoing consultation to classroom teachers about student needs and progress.
  • Consult with DWC audiologists and consultants on audiological, educational, and equipment needs.
