About Slice Out Hunger
Slice Out Hunger is a nationally recognized nonprofit that harnesses the power of pizza to fight food insecurity. America’s pizza enthusiasm is strong, with over 77,000 pizzerias grossing upwards of $47 billion. Founder Scott Wiener launched Scott’s Pizza Tours in 2008 and later founded Slice Out Hunger as a parallel nonprofit in 2015. The organization operates on the principles that everybody is important, everybody deserves basic human services, and everybody loves pizza.
Their current operations include:
- Pie it Forward: The primary ongoing program where donated funds purchase pizza from independently-owned shops across the country for hunger relief organizations like shelters and soup kitchens.
- Pizza Partners: A network of over 700 partners in all 50 states, DC, and Puerto Rico who pledge to donate or fundraise for hunger relief initiatives annually.
- Fundraising Campaigns & Events: Three live events (2 in NYC, 1 in Las Vegas) and an annual virtual campaign called Summer Slice-a-thon, with 100% of proceeds funding pizza for hunger relief.
Slice Out Hunger is a small but mighty team poised for rapid growth and seeks to expand operational capacity with this role.
About the Role
In the immediate short-term (12-18 months), the primary responsibility is direct fundraising to increase operational capacity from approximately $250k to $450k. You will build and implement a fundraising portfolio combining corporate donors and family foundations. For the right candidate, this role can evolve long-term, offering opportunities to specialize or build and manage a development team. The consistent thread is serving as Slice Out Hunger’s strongest advocate.
Responsibilities
- Prospect, build, and maintain a major gifts pipeline to grow operational capacity from $250k to $450k within 18 months.
- Build and maintain donor relationships to meet and exceed fundraising goals.
- Track prospects in the project management platform (Monday) and donor records in the DRM (Bloomerang). Prior experience with these systems required.
- Cultivate and deepen relationships with existing major contributors, aligning their partnership goals with the mission.
- Follow up with previous major gift donors to re-engage them.
- Identify grant opportunities aligned with strategic goals and prepare supporting documentation (letters of inquiry, proposals, budgets).
- Conduct exploratory calls with inbound partnership requests to assess alignment with the mission.
- Advise on expanding peer-to-peer fundraising capacity, such as the Summer Slice-a-thon.
- Contribute to organizational fundraising strategies and strategic planning in partnership with the Director of Operations.
- Analyze employer-matched donations to identify strong candidates for corporate donations and foster those relationships.
- Collaborate with the social media manager on communication strategies supporting institutional fundraising goals.
- Develop reports and dashboards to keep stakeholders informed on development progress.
- Identify new opportunities for digital and traditional fundraising platforms.
- Travel as needed (10-15% of the year) to serve as an ambassador at industry trade shows, benefits, and in-person donor interactions.
Requirements
- Minimum of 6 years of fundraising experience in the nonprofit sector, specifically in development or partnerships roles.
- Proven history of prospecting and developing relationships with financial decision-makers, particularly with philanthropically-minded corporations and family foundations.
- Strong ability to pivot and shift focus based on organizational needs.
- Passion for addressing food insecurity and belief that access to basic necessities like food is a right, not a privilege.
- Approachable, gregarious, and able to build rapport with diverse audiences.
- Effective and persuasive communicator, able to tailor messaging to different audiences.
- Attentive listener with a strong memory for personal details, valuing small particulars in relationship-building.
Benefits
- Health insurance.
- Paid Time Off (negotiable).
