About Us sweat variant describes the collaborative practice of Okwui Okpokwasili and Peter Born. We are partners in our work and our lives. Since 1996, we have been working at the intersection of dance, theater, and visual art to make challenging and rigorous work that reaffirms that which has been deemed marginal as the true center through the exploration of Black interiority. sweat variant was founded in 2018, and is led by a small team including the co-Artistic Directors, the Company Producer, the Studio and Initiatives Manager, and the Partnership Development Consultant. sweat variant was formed both to sustain Okpokwasili and Born’s collaborative work in New York City and to build a network of support for artists, particularly Black women, as well as queer and trans artists. As part of our belief that a thriving arts ecosystem depends on a network of mutual support and cultivation among artists, sweat variant created the Artists Supporting Artists Program and Threading residency. The infrastructure of our company is intentionally non-hierarchical and based in a process of continuous inquiry about what our community needs. This coming season, sweat variant will premiere adaku, part 2, the newest installment of the adaku trilogy, and begin a national tour of the work that will continue into 2028. We are also opening two visual art exhibitions in Columbus, Ohio, and Boston, Massachusetts. We are in a pivotal moment for the company, in which building new, sustainable development infrastructure is a priority.
