Art & CreativeFull-time

Led by Dr Oonagh Murphy at Goldsmiths, University of London and partnered with Arts Council England, this fellowship aims to develop a Responsible AI Innovation Framework for the subsidised arts and culture sector.

About the role

This project collaborates with Arts Council England to embed responsible AI practices into strategies and policies within the arts and culture sector. The fellowship addresses two key challenges identified by Arts Council England:

  • Encouraging the sector to experiment with and create new work and business models through responsible AI use.
  • Protecting the intellectual property and moral rights of artists and arts organisations while supporting their economic livelihoods.

The project will establish a comprehensive Responsible AI Innovation Framework to increase understanding and application of ethical AI technologies, safeguarding artistic integrity and intellectual property. It will develop new models, tools, and practices to integrate responsible AI considerations into development strategies, sector guidance, and policies.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct action research with Arts Council England, including interviews and workshops with ACE staff to co-develop Responsible AI Innovation Frameworks.
  • Foster a culture of ethical AI adoption by creating resources and workshop formats that promote awareness and skill development.
  • Embed responsible innovation AI frameworks within Arts Council England’s internal operations.
  • Co-write a position paper, Arts Council England in the Age of AI, outlining how ACE has integrated responsible AI frameworks into its operations and its stance on the sector’s use of AI.
  • Engage with academic networks and cultural policymakers, including government, to connect this project with broader responsible AI initiatives in the culture and creative industries sector.
  • Facilitate dialogue with other public bodies, such as Arts Councils of Northern Ireland and Wales, Creative Scotland, Creative UK, and the British Council’s Arts and Creative Economy Teams.

Collaboration and Impact

The Institute for Creative and Cultural Entrepreneurship at Goldsmiths and the BRAID network will support further development and research leadership in Responsible AI and Cultural Policy.
