About the Role

This position focuses on refactoring legacy workflows—transitioning traditional flat-file transfers and batch ETLs into modern, API-driven, pub/sub, and orchestrated integration solutions. Under limited direction, you will design, develop, and support complex system integrations, pipelines, web applications, and cloud-based data systems within the district’s enterprise environment. You will serve as a technical expert in web application development lifecycle and ETL orchestration, collaborating with team members to ensure adherence to data governance standards and producing reliable, supportable infrastructure aligned with District priorities.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain scalable integrations and solutions sourcing data from SIS, HR, Finance, transportation, assessment, vendor platforms, and other enterprise systems.
• Design, build, and maintain custom web applications and agentic workflows.
• Leverage and inform the development of Snowflake data models.
• Manage integrations using tools such as dbt, Workato, SQL, Python scripts, APIs, and cloud-native services; monitor workflows and resolve data pipeline issues.
• Ensure adherence to data governance policies, privacy requirements, and security standards including FERPA, role-based access, and metadata documentation.
• Support the development and implementation of districtwide data strategies, standards, and best practices.
• Analyze complex data issues, troubleshoot system errors, and perform root-cause analysis to identify long-term solutions.
• Demonstrate a commitment to the Portland Public Schools Racial Equity and Social Justice Commitment by applying the PPS Racial Educational Equity Policy and RESJ Framework in daily practices and data governance decisions.
• Maintain current knowledge of Snowflake capabilities, cloud data engineering trends, emerging technologies, and industry best practices; participate in professional development.
• Deconstruct undocumented legacy integrations, rebuild them using Workato following new design principles (pub/sub, API).
• Rebuild legacy web apps within AWS when feasible.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information science, data engineering, or a closely related field. A master’s degree in a related discipline is desirable.
• Three (3) or more years of combined experience conducting technology business process analysis, development and integration for multiple platforms, and implementing end-user quality assurance test plans for software acceptance across multiple platforms.
• Experience with public-sector or K–12 education environments is a plus.
• Any combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities may be considered.

Skills

• Fluency with SQL and Python.
• Familiarity with team project work via Git/source control.
• Familiarity working with Snowflake and web-based integration tools (Airflow, Workato, Mulesoft).
• Knowledge of SQL, dbt, API-driven integrations, and ELT/ETL concepts.
• Experience with cloud environments (AWS/Azure) and data tools (Python, Workato, Airflow, Git).
• Modern web development, hosting, and Software Development Life Cycle.
• Data governance, metadata management, role-based access control, and FERPA requirements.
• Technical documentation and Agile development practices.
• Equity-centered data practices and culturally responsive communication.
• Ability to design, build, and maintain efficient, reliable scripts and automations.
• Ability to use programming languages and tools (Python, SQL, dbt, Git, etc.) to develop integrations and data manipulation.
• Ability to analyze complex data structures, identify system issues, and implement solutions.
• Ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams and communicate technical concepts to nontechnical audiences.
• Ability to ensure data accuracy, security, and compliance with district and legal requirements.
• Ability to support the District’s Racial Educational Equity Policy and contribute to an inclusive work environment.
• Ability to work independently, maintain confidentiality, and deliver high-quality customer service.

Pay

The pay range for this position is $40.00 - $45.00 per hour.

Schedule

• This is a fully onsite position in Portland, OR.
• Work hours may include occasional evenings or weekends in support of data releases, upgrades, or critical system events.
