About the role
The Detention Officer I is responsible for the supervision, transportation, and security of inmates housed within the Halifax County Detention Facility. Work involves admitting and booking inmates, preparing inmates for transport and court or medical facilities, feeding inmates, and supervising all other activity by inmates. Work also involves preparing computerized reports and logs, periodic searches, maintaining security, and counseling and advising inmates as needed. Work requires operating a computer management system and overseeing control and surveillance centers within the facility. Work is performed in accordance with policies and procedures, North Carolina Department of Human Resources guidelines, and the Training and Standards Council of the Department of Justice of North Carolina.
Responsibilities
- Supervise, transport, and ensure the security of inmates
- Admit and book inmates into the facility
- Prepare inmates for transport to court or medical facilities
- Feed inmates and supervise their activities
- Prepare computerized reports and logs
- Conduct periodic searches and maintain facility security
- Counsel and advise inmates as needed
- Operate a computer management system
- Oversee control and surveillance centers within the facility
Requirements
- Graduation from high school or GED
- At least 21 years of age
- Valid North Carolina driver’s license
- U.S. citizenship
- Ability to obtain certification as a law enforcement officer in accordance with the North Carolina Sheriff’s Training and Standards Commission
- Meet minimum standards set forth by the NC Sheriff Training and Standards (12NCAC 10B.0301)
- Willingness to work 12-hour rotating shifts, including holidays and weekends
Pay
The hiring range for this position is $50,017 - $55,994.
