Detention Officer

About the role

The purpose of this position is to provide care, custody, and control of inmates, ensuring the safety and security of inmates, other officers, the facility, and the public.

Responsibilities

• Makes sure inmates behave safely and follow rules.
• Supplies food and materials to inmates and takes them to health appointments.
• Processes new inmates, releases them, and keeps track of their belongings and paperwork.
• Maintains cleanliness and proper functioning of detention facilities.
• Monitors inmates for rule-breaking and behavioral changes, using force if necessary.
• Schedules and supervises inmate activities, maintains discipline, and prevents fights, assaults, riots, and escapes.
• Ensures safety and security of staff, inmates, visitors, and detention facilities.
• Administers medications and oversees inmate hygiene and showers.
• Schedules and transports inmates for medical, counseling, personal, and court-related appointments.
• Conducts bookkeeping of inmates, searching and examining them, collecting and inventorying their belongings, and filing and distributing records.
• Verifies and files documentation for inmates' release, returning their property and notifying victims.
• Updates and maintains various files, records, logs, charts, and documents, preparing reports as needed.

Qualifications

Requires a high school diploma or equivalent, along with a valid Arizona driver's license. Previous experience in correctional facilities or similar settings is preferred.
