This position is within the Engineering Services Division Office (ES-DO), supporting facilities across 38 square miles of the Laboratory and promoting a workplace culture centered on mutual respect and inclusivity.

Note: This position will be filled at either the Designer/Drafter 1 or 2 level depending on the skills of the selected candidate.

Responsibilities

  • Advanced CAD Modeling and Drafting: Create and revise 2D/3D models, drawings, and layouts for structural, architectural, mechanical, electrical, and facility systems using high-level parametric CAD tools.
  • Cross-Functional Design Collaboration: Collaborate with engineers and stakeholders on design concepts, hardware layouts, and field assessments.
  • Interdisciplinary Design Review Participation: Participate in design reviews and help resolve design compatibility or interface issues across disciplines.
  • Regulatory and Code Compliance: Ensure compliance with relevant industry codes and standards (e.g., ASME, AWS, IEEE).
  • Commitments to Safety and Security: Maintain safety and security as a core part of every task. Follow Laboratory safety procedures and take necessary steps to stop unsafe or non-compliant work.
  • Workplace Culture and Inclusivity: Support a respectful, inclusive, and harassment-free workplace culture.

Designer/Drafter 1

  • Foundational Design Support: Support basic design tasks under the guidance of senior designers and engineers.
  • Entry-Level Engineering Calculations and Standards: Perform entry-level calculations and apply foundational knowledge of materials, drafting standards, and fabrication processes.
  • Simple Component and System Development: Develop design solutions for simple components and systems in static or low-complexity environments.
  • Introduction to GD&T and Modeling Principles: Learn and apply basic principles of GD&T, design intent, and modeling best practices.
  • Independent Task Execution and Team Collaboration: Work with minimal direction on routine assignments and participate as part of a collaborative design team.

Designer/Drafter 2

In addition to the responsibilities outlined at level 1, at the Designer/Drafter 2 level you will perform the following duties:

  • Facility Design and Assessment: Create detailed 2D and 3D designs to assess, maintain, and upgrade facility systems. Conduct site visits to evaluate, identify, and document deficiencies, supporting new construction, renovations, and repairs with basic design solutions.
  • Technical Design and Calculations: Produce technical calculations and preliminary design recommendations for engineer review, ensuring compliance with industry standards such as ASME, ASTM, AWS, and IEEE.
  • Collaboration and Problem-Solving: Work closely with engineers, stakeholders, and cross-disciplinary teams on design reviews, interface clarifications, and problem resolution. Contribute to a collaborative, team-oriented environment.
  • Safety and Security Compliance: Ensure safety and security are integral to every task, maintain relevant training, and stop work when safety or security is compromised.
  • Engineering Expertise: Apply knowledge of engineering policies, procedures, and technical standards in drafting and design. Provide cross-functional support and address unique challenges in both static and dynamic applications.
  • Advanced CAD Proficiency: Utilize high-level 3D parametric CAD systems and Product Data Management tools to optimize modeling standards and practices. Mentor junior designers and perform drawing checks according to ASME Y14.5 or laboratory drafting standards.
  • Project Leadership and Support: Define requirements, develop designs for large-scale projects, and contribute to cost estimation, scheduling, and design strategies. Independently complete complex tasks with minimal supervision and mentor lower-level staff.
  • Creative Problem-Solving: Devise original, innovative solutions for complex design challenges, often impacting project outcomes. Solutions require ingenuity, creativity, and technical expertise.
  • Material Expertise: Evaluate and select engineering materials for complex fabrication needs, ensuring suitability for design objectives.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Participate in design reviews, ensure compatibility across disciplines, and address issues to deliver cohesive design packages.
  • Independent and Team Contributions: Balance leadership, mentorship, and independent responsibilities to deliver expert results with long-term project impact.
