About the role
This role involves the preparation, development, and coordination of maps, sketches, diagrams, schematics, and other engineering-related drawings. Responsibilities include assisting engineers in project decision-making through documentation, preparing study layouts, detailed design drawings, and cost estimates. Additionally, tasks include checking manufacturer's drawings, coordinating with other design groups, and providing work direction and training.
Responsibilities
- Develop and coordinate design drawings and sketches
- Use computer aided design software and Microsoft Office
- Prepare and analyze calculations, conduct design and engineering studies
- Carry drawings and related information to completion
- Check manufacturers' drawings and shop details, recommend changes
- Review and exchange information with other design groups
- Coordinate and review the work of others
- Prepare material and cost estimates
- Perform work according to applicable design standards, criteria, and procedures
- Write notes relative to construction stages
- Furnish work direction and assist in training of other employees
- Submit progress reports on job status
- Lead training for AEP or third-party employees in basic skills
- Promote and support the Company's Accident Prevention and Safety and Health programs
- Demonstrate ethical behavior as outlined in AEP corporate policies
- Support AEP Corporate Compliance policies
- Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements
- Associate degree in applied science (AAS) drafting and CAD or in civil, electrical, or mechanical engineering technology, or relevant equivalent experience and/or education
- Four (4) years of experience in electric utility and/or related industrial drafting and/or computer aided drafting work, or equivalent experience without AAS degree
- Proficient in conventional drafting symbols and methods, able to distinguish colors
- Able to operate a motor vehicle and maintain a valid state driver's license
- Meet all vehicle operation requirements as designated by federal and/or state law
- May require shift work or overtime
- Occasional overnight travel to and work within a substation or power plant environment

Skills
- Proficiency in computer aided design software
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office
- Ability to prepare and analyze calculations
- Experience in electric utility and/or related industrial drafting and/or computer aided drafting work
- Ability to distinguish colors
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle and maintain a valid state driver's license
- Knowledge of conventional drafting symbols and methods
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills
