Design Systems Architect
About the role
The Design Systems Architect role is centered on systems-level frontend engineering, architecture, and developer enablement. You will join a team responsible for building and maintaining frontend tooling used across numerous applications.
Responsibilities
- Maintain and grow the React component library, ensuring the quality of implementations that product teams depend on daily.
- Build relationships with internal teams to understand their pain points and champion their needs back into the system.
- Influence component specifications by providing feedback on API design and real-world usage to shape best practices.
- Partner with system designers to translate design intent into React implementations and provide feedback on technical constraints and opportunities.
- Champion the developer experience by proposing API shapes, naming conventions, and composition patterns.
- Ensure the React component library remains in parity with the broader design system, closing any gaps in functionality or interaction support.
- Engage in component proposals and provide a React-specific perspective on cross-cutting decisions.
- Participate in hands-on daily development using TypeScript, React, and related testing and documentation tools.
Requirements
- Proven experience as a senior or principal-level engineer with a systems-thinking mindset and strong architectural depth.
- Demonstrated experience building tools, frameworks, or libraries used by other developers.
- Experience in systems design, research-oriented problem-solving, and solving novel technical problems.
- Experience with React and an interest in learning and working with its internal mechanics.
Technical Skills
- Proficiency in frontend development with a focus on systems-level engineering rather than application page-building.
- Ability to write clear and concise documentation, including changelogs, prop documentation, and architecture notes.
- Familiarity with consuming and integrating token-based design systems.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience shipping tooling that other developers use, with an understanding of composition tradeoffs and library maintenance.
- Background in languages such as C, C++, C#, or Java is considered a strong plus due to the engineering rigor associated with them.
- Previous experience with design systems, component libraries, or framework and platform engineering.
- Curiosity about how different frameworks operate and the ability to recognize patterns across paradigms.
- A collaborative approach to accessibility and experience implementing guidance from accessibility experts.
