Design Engineering Manager

Leads a multi-discipline design-engineering department (Mechanical, Electrical, I&C, Civil, Stress) that supports safe, reliable, and efficient operation of Columbia Generating Station.

Responsibilities

• Manages supervisors, engineers, designers, and drafters—hiring, setting performance expectations, conducting reviews, approving promotions, salary changes, transfers, and terminations.
• Removes process obstacles so staff can complete assignments on schedule.
• Provides technical direction and counseling to staff and other organizations on analysis techniques, regulatory requirements, and engineering solutions.
• Establishes clear, achievable expectations; fosters teamwork; and monitors performance.
• Stays current with industry operating experience, technological advances, and regulatory changes.
• Implements management controls to ensure compliance with NRC and industry regulations, policies, and standards.
• Conducts plant operability assessments to support continued operation when degraded equipment is identified.
• Develops staff through training, varied assignments, and increasing responsibility.
• Prepares and monitors department budgets, schedules, long-range plans, priorities, and staffing.
• Sets department policies, goals, and resource-loaded schedules aligned with corporate direction.
• Maintains accurate, up-to-date drawings; prepares procurement specifications; approves design packages; and authors technical reports for regulators and management.
• Supports 24/7 on-call duties as part of the Emergency Response Organization (ERO), outage support, and engineering duty cycle (typically two weeks every eight weeks for ERO, 12-hour shifts during outages, and one-week call-out assignments).

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering or physical science from an accredited institution.
• Ten years of engineering, maintenance, or operations experience, with at least seven years in the nuclear industry.
• Minimum of five years at an operating nuclear power plant.
• Minimum of three years of management experience overseeing significant engineering, operations, maintenance, or construction programs.

Preferred Qualifications

• Active or previous Senior Reactor Operator (SRO) license, SRO certification, or BWR Management Certification.
• Experience outside the Engineering team (e.g., Maintenance, Work Management, Operations, Chemistry/Radiation Protection).

Pay

Annual salary range: $192,178 – $288,268 (midpoint $240,223). Selected candidates are typically hired between the minimum and midpoint based on experience, qualifications, market rate, internal equity, and budget.

Eligible for annual incentive compensation based on performance against defined metrics and company goals.
