About the role

Woolpert is hiring a Design Engineer in Training to join our dynamic Water Team at our Houston, Texas office. This position is primarily responsible for assisting with technical delivery on projects and is key in establishing and improving levels of team technical competence, quality, and efficiency. You will engage clients across the Water markets in Texas and nationwide, supporting client objectives in Water Resources Design, Drainage Design, Utilities Design, Site Civil Design, Data Analytics, Organizational Performance, Process Improvement, and related studies and analyses.

Responsibilities

  • Work under the direction of a PE and support Project Managers/Project Engineers in performing design work, preparing reports, conducting field work, and contributing to project management tasks related to stormwater design, water distribution, sanitary collection, and land development/site design.
  • Use CAD Civil3D to create and/or aid in designs, prepare technical plans, specifications, and cost estimates, ensuring precision and adherence to project requirements while improving your understanding of project budgeting and financial implications.
  • Assist PMs with schedules, scopes, and budgets.
  • Perform design-related calculations and read/design plans.
  • Identify issues and develop creative solutions.
  • Attend meetings with clients and stakeholders; prepare and present your work and meeting minutes.
  • Understand and follow local and state regulations across Texas, Pennsylvania, and Virginia related to design procedures, ensuring designs adhere to these standards.
  • Provide quality control reviews on designs and reports.
  • Actively participate in firm-wide quality initiatives, helping implement and uphold high standards across all projects.
  • Depending on project needs, assume a sub-project manager role in complex projects, coordinating specific segments and gaining early leadership and project management experience.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification, having passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.
  • Minimum 4 to 6 years of experience (6 to 8 years preferred).
  • Experience with Civil 3D is required.
  • Eagerness and ability to obtain a Professional Engineer (PE) license within 2 years of accepting the job.

Pay

Base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Pay Range: $75,400 - $113,200 USD.
