About the role
The Design Engineer II will be part of a project team overseeing the design and development of new products or the redesign of current products. This position performs engineering functions to design and/or redesign products in accordance with quality, production, and customer standards, while organizing and executing tasks associated with creating and implementing product designs.
Responsibilities
- Gather and interpret data concerning product design from sources such as customer comments, warranty reports, performance testing, and existing designs to identify criteria for new or modified designs.
- Coordinate efforts with internal and external groups, including Marketing, Manufacturing, Vendors, Purchasers, Customers, and other Engineers to align designs with business and customer needs.
- Perform and oversee quality checks to ensure products meet specifications, including conducting testing procedures, analyzing results, and implementing corrective actions.
- Create and develop new or revised product designs using the NX design drafting system, producing layouts, detail drawings, and SL drawings as required.
- Perform basic and complex calculations in mechanical, electrical, or hydraulic engineering, analyzing design attributes such as strength, loads, forces, stress, tolerances, fluid pressure, and flow rates.
- Field and answer questions about products and product design, communicating designs and changes through recommendations, proposals, and presentations.
- Oversee and conduct the assembly, building, ordering, installation, and testing of prototype parts.
- Check and verify the completeness and accuracy of all work performed by the incumbent and others.
- Maintain a high level of technical competence, including knowledge of products, customer needs, and competitor products.
- Apply standards set forth by UL, NFPA, ANSI, ISO, ITA, and others in all work.
- Participate in and lead quality improvement teams, focusing on manufacturing processes, efficiency, product quality, cost, and customer relations, and present team findings.
- Travel to other facilities or locations to participate in meetings, examine truck operations, and investigate product design problems, which may include on-site observation, disassembly, and inspection of parts.
- Assemble prototypes of trucks and/or truck components.
- Share information and answer questions related to planning, design, alterations, and production.
- Act as a team member in domestic and international work, meetings, teleconferences, and other functions to transfer information, improve working relationships, and contribute to team success.
- Demonstrate effective concern for the quality of output and the needs, concerns, and priorities of all customers, both internal and external.
Requirements
- 4-year Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering or Physical Sciences.
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience in product engineering designing mobile equipment or 5 years of product design in a related field.
- Prior experience using a design drafting package, preferably IDEAS or NX.
- Prior experience using an MRP system.
- Basic mechanical understanding of fork truck design and operation.
- Ability to travel domestically and internationally.
- Must be able to work in the U.S. indefinitely without sponsorship.
