About the Role
Chart Industries specializes in the design and fabrication of cryogenic equipment, solving complex challenges for diverse applications—from space exploration and low-carbon energy solutions to food and beverage technology. As part of this team, you’ll contribute to the development of HLH2 vehicle fuel systems, working on everything from conceptual design to on-site installation and commissioning.
Responsibilities
- Product design, documentation, and support for HLH2 vehicle fuel systems.
- Research and develop design solutions to meet end-customer requirements.
- Create multiple design iterations using 3D CAD system software.
- Evaluate designs via FEA using SolidWorks or ANSYS, including vibration, shock load, cycle fatigue studies, and crash simulations based on customer road-load profiles.
- Develop 3D models and 2D drawings of components, subsystems, and tank systems for internal use and customer deliverables.
- Cascade component-level specifications to suppliers and collaborate with Product Engineers to discuss requirements.
- Conduct packaging studies for Chart’s systems integrated into customer 3D truck models.
- Support the development and execution of tests to validate designs.
- Evaluate design solutions against industry standards, regulatory requirements, and customer specifications.
- Become a technical expert in the design and function of HLH2 vehicle tank fuel systems.
- Review and participate in product changes via the Engineering Change Request process.
- Provide technical information and specifications for components, assemblies, and final products.
- Participate in the development of DFMEAs and DVP&Rs.
- Support interdepartmental teams in the U.S. and Europe to assess manufacturability, improve production efficiency, evaluate tooling requirements, and estimate labor/material costs.
- Provide direct Product Engineering support to resolve design-related issues.
- Prepare engineering documentation for technical inquiries from customers.
- Work with interdepartmental teams to ensure compliance with ISO 9001, IATF 16949, and customer-specific requirements.
- Engage with relevant standards organizations (e.g., ISO, NFPA, SAE).
- Adhere to safety procedures and policies.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by management.
Physical Work Environment
- Physical Requirements: Frequent standing, sitting, walking, computer work, and lifting up to 25 lbs; occasional heavier lifting. Hands-on work may include interacting with different types of trucks.
- Work Environment: Production factory support and office environment. Work-related travel may be required 2–4 times a year, including possible domestic or international travel to customer sites for data gathering or project work.
- Work Hazards: Exposure to materials with rough edges, temperature extremes, moving mechanical parts, occasional flying debris, chemical cleaning solvents, and their odors. Working with cryogenic products may involve exposure to pressurized flammable gas, pressurized oxidizing gas, pressurized inert gas, and very low temperatures (-423°F).
Requirements
- BS degree required, preferably in Mechanical Engineering.
- Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience.
- Experience in the Heavy Truck/Automotive Industry as an OEM supplier or manufacturer is a plus.
- Experience with heavy truck, automotive, or diesel engine fuel delivery and electrical systems is a plus.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Highly motivated self-starter and team player with a customer service orientation.
Skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Proven experience with 3D modeling and design using AutoCAD/Inventor and/or SolidWorks.
- Exposure to JD Edwards or similar manufacturing software.
- Basic understanding of cryogenic liquids and their properties.
- Understanding of heat transfer and vacuum insulation.
- Experience performing FEA via SolidWorks and ANSYS.
- Knowledge of APQP, PPAP, FMEA, and Control Plans is a plus.
