About the role

Malibu, the world’s leading towboat manufacturer, is seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to join their Product Development Engineering team. This position supports both New Product Engineering and Product Development in the continuous improvement of Malibu products.

Responsibilities

  • Assume the lead engineering role on multiple new product designs and continuous improvements in boat interior and exterior designs, including hull, deck, stringer, interior components, thermoform, lamination, and other mechanical systems, in collaboration with the Industrial Design team.
  • Perform and evaluate weight studies and CFD runs for new model design.
  • Design mechanical parts for lamination, CNC production, injection molding, and vacuum forming.
  • Develop and maintain technical mechanical drawings and specifications for new and existing designs (e.g., hull, deck, stringer, interior components, exterior hardware).
  • Use engineering and computer design software, including surface modeling, NX, SolidWorks, and AutoCAD.
  • Manage new product design and continuous improvement of Malibu and Axis boats’ mechanical designs.
  • Prepare and manage estimates, cost reports, and project schedules for multiple projects and suppliers.
  • Confer with management, production, sales, and supply chain to assess engineering feasibility, cost, customer demand, and product value improvements.
  • Provide cross-departmental support with a focus on daily manufacturing and continuous quality improvements.
  • Identify opportunities for product improvements and re-engineer designs to enhance form, fit, and function.
  • Investigate system/product weaknesses to drive continuous improvement and prevent issues.
  • Specify system components to ensure proper product functionality.
  • Manage and coordinate multiple projects to keep them on time and on budget.
  • Collaborate with outside vendors/suppliers to provide design feedback, areas of improvement, and testing results.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • BSME or related degree from an ABET-accredited university.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in mechanical engineering and product development.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in SolidWorks, NX, or other parametric 3D CAD software.
  • Experience in surface modeling, NX, and AutoCAD preferred.
  • Experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Familiarity with production processes for components requiring injection molding, casting, CNC milling, tool handling, and material preparation.
  • Portfolio of mechanical design projects preferred.
  • Strong English communication skills.
  • Proficiency in mathematics up to the algebraic level for problem-solving.

Work Environment

  • Exposure to heat/cold, dust/dampness, height, chemicals, and noise.
  • Safety glasses required in production areas; additional PPE may be required based on specific projects.
  • Typical workdays are 8–10 hours, with frequent overtime required.
