Position Summary

The Tool Designer plans, designs, and integrates tooling, fixtures, dies, and related equipment used throughout Morton Industries’ manufacturing processes. This position partners closely with Engineering, Tooling, Maintenance, Quality, and Operations to develop effective manufacturing solutions, improve process capability, reduce costs, and support the ongoing improvement of production processes.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Research and analyze manufacturing methods required to produce products in accordance with customer requirements and specifications.

  • Design tooling, jigs, fixtures, dies, and support equipment necessary to meet manufacturing and product requirements.

  • Develop detailed drawings, prints, specifications, and other documentation required for the fabrication of tooling and equipment.

  • Partner with supervisors, Engineering, Quality, and Operations to improve product quality, manufacturability, and process capability.

  • Cook with Maintenance on new equipment installations, modifications, and complex troubleshooting needs.

  • Identify opportunities to reduce manufacturing time, material usage, and overall production costs.

  • Support and implement cost-reduction initiatives driven by customer requirements or organizational goals.

  • Obtain and evaluate quotes for equipment, machinery, tooling, and other resources required for process improvements.

  • Provide accurate technical information and documentation to support the development and maintenance of controlled work instructions.

  • Apply a working knowledge of ISO 9001 requirements within assigned responsibilities.

  • Support continuous improvement efforts related to tooling, equipment, manufacturing processes, safety, quality, and productivity.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position does not have direct supervisory responsibilities.

Education, Experience & Qualifications

  • Demonstrated knowledge of tooling, fixture, jig, and die design within a manufacturing environment.

  • Ability to read, interpret, and develop detailed technical drawings, prints, and specifications.

  • Working knowledge of manufacturing processes, materials, and equipment.

  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.

  • Able to manage multiple projects and priorities effectively.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Working knowledge of ISO 9001 standards.

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with Engineering, Quality, Maintenance, Tooling, and Operations.

PREFERRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s in Engineering, Design, or equivalent.

  • 3+ years’ experience in a manufacturing environment.

  • Multi-plant experience is a plus.

  • Experience with a manufacturing ERP software, especially Syteline ERP.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications

  • High level of proficiency using spreadsheet applications such as Excel, including the use of pivot tables.

  • Regular and reliable attendance is required to successfully perform the responsibilities of this position.

  • Employees must meet all Company attendance requirements.

  • Safe work habits and adherence to all Company policies, procedures, and requirements related to workplace health and safety are required.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This position works in both office and manufacturing environments. While performing duties on the manufacturing floor, the employee may be exposed to moving mechanical equipment, machinery, noise, and other conditions typical of an industrial manufacturing environment. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Employees may occasionally be required to lift and/or move materials or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
