The New York Post is seeking a creative and versatile Design Editor to join our dynamic newsroom. Reporting Tuesday through Saturday from 11am-7pm, you’ll be responsible for designing compelling digital visuals, staying ahead of design trends, and collaborating with the team to enhance storytelling.
Responsibilities
- Design compelling digital visuals including interactive infographics, illustrations, editorial print features, animations for online and social platforms, composites and maps.
- Stay ahead of design trends, tools, and techniques to keep visuals fresh, relevant, and competitive.
- Collaborate with the Lead Design Editor and Senior Design Editors to develop innovative graphic concepts that align with the Post's bold brand identity.
- Work closely with editorial teams to integrate text and visuals seamlessly, enhancing storytelling whether digitally or in print.
- Generate fresh ideas for visual storytelling, with a strong focus on engaging digital content.
- Prioritize multiple projects efficiently in a deadline-driven environment.
Requirements
- Strong proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, After Effects) and design tools such as Flourish and MapCreator.
- A digital-first approach with ability to create designs for web, mobile, and social platforms; Solid foundation in print design techniques is also necessary.
- Exceptional sense of typography, layout, and visual and information hierarchy.
- Create charts and visualizations from complex datasets such as financial reports, press releases, etc., and distill information for general audiences.
- Ability to think creatively and strategically under tight deadlines.
- Passion for news, sports, viral content, pop culture, and emerging digital trends.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with a proactive approach to problem-solving.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- A portfolio showcasing a range of design work, especially digital projects.
- Willingness to work on weekends and holidays as needed.
- Basic coding knowledge (HTML, CSS, JAVA), though not required.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have a strong background in design, a passion for news, and the ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. Basic coding knowledge is preferred but not required.
