Design Associate - Interiors

About the role

You’ll work as a design professional, producing innovative, appropriate, and cost-effective designs, drawings, and specifications for assigned projects. This role offers the opportunity to grow into an independent resource, coordinate work with other disciplines, and fulfill experience requirements for eligibility to take the professional license exam.

Responsibilities

• Conceptual Design: Establish discipline basis of design for Design Manager review.
• Detailed Design & Analysis:
  • Perform dimensional, interference, and basic design checks on layouts and sketches of Licensed Professionals and interdisciplinary drawing sets.
  • Perform assigned analysis or calculations.
  • Incorporate safety into drawings and ensure design compliance with Owner criteria.
• Detailing:
  • Apply discipline design and detailing fundamentals under the supervision of and subject to final approval by the Lead Professional.
  • Assist Lead Professional with plotting, production, and assembly of drawing packages and writing specifications.
  • Conduct code compliance reviews with a design professional.
  • Maintain AE checklists for Design Manager review.
  • Participate in coordination review sessions.
  • Maintain orderly work files and prepare clear, well-written memos/correspondence.
  • Prepare presentation materials when assigned.
  • Coordinate and check work to minimize deficiencies, errors, and omissions using Haskell standards and procedures.
• Construction Documents: Produce well-organized, finished design documents of good appearance, accuracy, clarity, and correctness from layouts, sketches, or written instructions.
• Construction Support:
  • Check shop drawings and submittal data for conformance with contract documents, subject to final approval by the Lead Professional.
  • Assist Lead Professional in field inspections, development of solutions to field problems, preparation of field orders, addenda, and record drawings.
  • Return shop drawings on schedule.
  • Respond to field/construction questions as directed by discipline leader.
  • Create inspection reports and punch lists.
• Planning, Scheduling, and Profitability:
  • Create work plans for assigned tasks.
  • Monitor and project personal workload status, advising supervisor of difficulties in accomplishing schedules.
  • Meet scheduled key dates and discuss progress regularly with Licensed Professional of Record.
  • Advise Design Manager of changes and design to budgeted man-hours.
• Project Management:
  • Adhere to project strategy.
  • Document meetings and telephone conversations to communicate to discipline leader.
  • Travel up to 20% annually.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in architecture or engineering required; degree from an accredited curriculum (NCARB or ABET) preferred.
• Beginner-level proficiency with discipline production software (e.g., SketchUp).
• Intermediate skill with Microsoft Office (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Environmental Factors and Physical Requirements

• Ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to visit other locations; ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and manipulate light to medium weights of 10-50 pounds.
• Good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand, and finger dexterity, including the ability to grasp and visual acuity to use a keyboard, operate equipment, and read application/form information.
• Frequent sitting, reaching with hands and arms, talking, and hearing.
