Desert Tortoise Field Biologists (Field Based)

About the role

ERM is hiring experienced Desert Tortoise Field Biologists to conduct pre-project protocol-level surveys for desert tortoise. This is a full-time (60 hours/week), limited-term role for a duration of 8 weeks in Beatty, NV.

Responsibilities

• Carry out protocol-level desert tortoise surveys.
• Use electronic data collection tools like Field Maps and Survey123.
• Work as part of a large team of biologists.
• Submit daily reports.
• Perform other duties as assigned or required.

Requirements

• A bachelor’s degree in a natural science field is preferred.
• Must have or be able to obtain Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) certification.
• Desert Tortoise Council Training is a plus.
• At least three years of experience with projects that surveyed, monitored, and mitigated for target species; one year of experience conducting presence/absence surveys for desert tortoises is required.
• Familiarity with desert tortoise survey protocols.
• Ability to work safely outdoors in various weather conditions and on challenging terrain.
• Capable of walking approximately 5km per day in desert conditions.
• Working knowledge of sub-meter accuracy GPS technologies and map interpretation skills (e.g., NWI, USGS, aerial photography).
• A strong attention to detail in documentation of work.
• Strong organizational and communication skills.
• Flexible work schedule may include weekends and/or overtime.
• A positive attitude and willingness to work in the field for extended periods.
• Independent and effective problem-solving and decision-making skills.
• Possession of a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record.

Pay Information

We anticipate the annual base pay for the Desert Tortoise Field Biologist position to be between $73,148 and $82,290, equivalent to $35.16 per hour to $39.56 per hour, depending on the factors mentioned above. This role is limited-term, non-exempt, and may be eligible for bonus pay.
