Primary Purpose
Under the supervision and direction of the Warden, the Deputy Warden manages various aspects of the Adult Detention Facility including custodial, treatment, education, personnel, and business programs. They develop and implement new strategies for departmental administration, plan and direct specific departmental activities, and review and evaluate the work of program personnel.
Maintains Accountability
- Maintains accountability of all inmates, as well as the security of the facility, its staff and employees.
- Tours, engages, and participates in facility-wide inspections.
Essential Job Functions
- Formulates current and long-range programs, plans, and policies.
- Collaborates with subordinate supervisors to coordinate work and schedule assignments.
- Directs the revision of rules, regulations, and procedures to meet changes in law or policy.
- Develops budget recommendations for capital outlay, personnel services, equipment, and materials.
- Ensures adherence to departmental policies and procedures.
- Selects and assigns staff, ensuring equal employment opportunity in hiring and promotions.
- Identifies staff development needs and ensures that training is obtained; maintains proper labor relations and conditions of employment.
- Conducts staff meetings and conferences to discuss operating problems, organization, budgetary matters, personnel matters, technical problems, and the status of programs and projects.
- Familiarizes and involves themselves with judicial-related matters associated to inmate intakes, court proceedings, and release processes.
- Assesses, problem solves, and mediates personnel issues.
- Enforces progressive discipline practices.
- Ensures strict compliance and confidentiality of sensitive information.
Knowledge/Skills
- Thorough knowledge of the principles and methods of Jail administration.
- Thorough knowledge of the routines, procedures, and techniques involved within a Correctional facility.
- Thorough knowledge of adult detention facility education and rehabilitation programs.
- Thorough knowledge of training and supervisory techniques pertaining to a Correctional facility.
- Ability to formulate policies and procedures based on information of a conceptual nature from varied and complex sources.
- Ability to plan, direct, and coordinate program and administrative activities of a complex, interrelated, and interdependent nature, where unknowns and numerous contingency factors are involved.
- Ability to assess, problem solve, and mediate personnel issues.
- Understanding and enforcement of progressive discipline practices.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university in Criminal Justice, Psychology, Sociology, or related field, plus 8 years of experience in a detention and/or correctional facility of which two (2) years must be in the rank of Captain or higher.
- Education and related experience may be substituted on a year for year basis.
- A completed New Mexico EDGE Public Supervisor certification will substitute for two (2) years of required supervisory experience.
Supplemental Information
- Work is in an adult detention facility, primarily in an office environment and occasionally outdoors in varied weather conditions with exposure to dust, fumes, airborne particles and/or allergens.
- Work may involve high risk or potentially dangerous situations, exposure to hazardous materials, excessive noise, and hostile individuals.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is required to sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands or arms; and talk or hear.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Clarity of vision at short distance is required.
- Evening, holiday, and weekend work is required.
- Occasional overnight travel is required.
- Subject to random pat down searches.
