Deputy Structural Design Manager
Provide leadership and technical oversight for the delivery of large-scale design-build infrastructure projects, which could exceed $1 billion in construction value. Partner with the Structural Design Manager to coordinate and integrate structural engineering teams across multiple firms and office locations, ensuring consistency in design standards, quality, and project execution. Review critical design decisions, manage technical interfaces, resolve complex engineering challenges, and oversee adherence to project requirements, codes, and client expectations. Support design schedule development, resource planning, risk management, and stakeholder coordination while fostering collaboration among internal teams.
Responsibilities
- Develop project scope and fee quotation; assist in preparing technical proposals and contracts in accordance with HNTB's Sophisticated Contracting Approach (SCA).
- Serve as the primary client liaison; manage the project team to deliver scope, schedule, and budgets to completion and client satisfaction.
- Assist with client project scoping and contract negotiations.
- Perform technical discipline tasks including analysis, reports, design, specification, and production for assigned projects.
- Implement the firm’s project delivery plan using HNTB's Sophisticated Delivery Approach (SDA) on each project; lead development and execution of the project management plan.
- Supervise and mentor team to meet overall project objectives.
- Coordinate with managers on project staffing, including recruitment, development, retention, and succession of project staff; support performance and compensation reviews.
- Partner with Client Service Leaders and pursuit champions to assist with business development, client relationships, and pursuit efforts for strategic projects in accordance with HNTB's Sophisticated Sales Approach (SSA).
- Prepare proposal and presentation materials; lead proposal development and interview presentations for strategic projects.
- May be responsible for recruitment, hiring, development, and retention of staff, including staff reporting, performance reviews, and succession planning.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering and 8 years of relevant experience.
- 2 years of task management or Deputy Project Manager experience.
- Experience successfully delivering projects on-time, on-budget, with quality, and client satisfaction (4for4) on smaller projects.
- Ability to identify and escalate risk and change management issues, with oversight from more experienced staff.
- Experience leading a technical team for small to midsize projects or task orders with a few subconsultants.
- Proficiency in using system tools to manage, monitor, and deliver smaller projects or task orders.
- Experience interfacing with client-level peers on other projects or task orders.
- Ability to provide strong technical guidance to team and task leads, and perform portions of the technical work.
- Demonstrated ability to learn, teach, and efficiently implement new standards.
Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Engineering (preferred).
- 10 years of relevant experience (preferred).
- Professional Engineer (PE) certification (preferred).
- Design-Build experience as structural technical lead and/or within design team management (strongly preferred).

Pay
The approximate pay range for Connecticut is $139,645.93 - $218,420.56. Actual compensation will depend on qualifications, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, and physical work location within the state.
