About the Role

Under the direction of the County Sheriff or designee, this position performs limited Sheriff’s Patrol, traffic control, and related law enforcement duties. The role is variable and as-needed for events, with a starting wage of $17.83 per hour, up to 19.5 hours per week. No benefits are provided. The next reserve deputy academy begins in February 2027.

Responsibilities

• Perform security patrols, traffic control, and assist deputy sheriffs and the public on matters such as safety awareness, community and school events, fairs, dragways, dances, and parades using vehicles, horseback, ORV, bike, and foot patrols.
• Carry out duties in compliance with Federal, State, County, and City laws and ordinances.
• Patrol County and City streets, parks, commercial, and residential areas alongside sheriff deputies to preserve peace, enforce laws, protect the public, and control traffic.
• Prepare reports and records, including daily logs, tow sheets, theft reports, vehicle impoundment forms, and traffic hazard reports.
• Maintain contact with supervisory personnel to coordinate activities and share department information.
• Assist with transports of adults, juveniles, or animals.
• Support crime scene security, including fire/accident scene perimeter control, crowd control, natural disaster/emergency response, court security, and marine patrol.
• Enforce County Park ordinances and conduct Parks Patrol.
• Assist in searches for lost children and missing persons.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
• Must be at least 21 years of age.
• Possess a valid Michigan driver’s license with a good driving record.
• No felony criminal convictions; must pass a department criminal background investigation.
• Must complete a structured training program/academy and qualify with approved firearms per departmental policy and MCOLES requirements.

Pay

$17.83 per hour.

Schedule

Variable, as-needed for events, up to 19.5 hours per week.
