Deputy Sheriff Cadet
About the role
This position is represented by the Stanford Deputy Sheriff’s Association (SDSA) and the collective bargaining agreement between the university and the SDSA governs the terms and conditions of employment. The university is located near Palo Alto, 35 miles south of San Francisco, on an 8,800-acre campus.
Responsibilities
- Attend a California P.O.S.T. certified basic police training academy or a regular basic academy requalification course, if applicable.
- Successfully pass the basic police academy or meet the requalification criteria to be sworn in as a Reserve Deputy Sheriff for Santa Clara County.
- Deputized as a sworn peace officer with full law enforcement powers to make arrests and enforce state laws and county ordinances.
- Enter the Field Training program as a probationary Deputy Sheriff upon deputization.
- Receive basic training that complies with the standards set by the California Commission of Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T).
- Participate in knowledge-based training including Criminal Law, Patrol Procedures, Cultural Diversity, Investigative Procedures, Report Writing, Defensive Tactics, Firearms, Leadership, Ethics, Community Policing, Police Vehicle Operations, Traffic Enforcement, Accident Investigation, Handling Emotional Situations, and First Aid/CPR.
- Engage in hands-on training such as weapons training, role playing scenarios, patrol procedures, emergency vehicle operations, and arrest and control techniques.
- Work in potentially dangerous and adverse conditions, including emergency situations, confined spaces, and intense life-threatening conditions.
- Work irregular work hours and all shifts, and be willing to work special events on the Stanford University campus.
Requirements
- Possess a valid California Class C Driver’s License prior to appointment.
- Be 21 years of age or older.
- Have completed forty-five (45) semester units or sixty (60) quarter units from an accredited college or university.
- Be free of any felony conviction or certain misdemeanor convictions that are disqualifying.
- Pass an extensive background investigation including medical and psychological examinations.
- Be of good moral character as determined by a thorough background investigation.
- Be free of any physical, emotional, or mental conditions that might adversely affect the exercise of the powers of a peace officer.
- Meet or exceed the expectations set by the Academy chain of command and successfully pass approximately 41 Learning Domains and practical exercises with a score established by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training.
- Meet or exceed written performance evaluations from the Recruit Training Officer at the academy in various areas.
Qualifications
- General Requirements: Possess a U.S. high school diploma or general education diploma (GED).
- Ability to pass an extensive background investigation including medical and psychological examinations.
- Ability to accommodate and schedule adjustments in order to meet academy and SUDPS training and special details.
- Willingness to work special events on scheduled days off or after regular academy shift hours, sometimes with little or no advance notice.
- Ability to wear and breathe through a respirator.

- Communication: Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Physical Fitness: Meet or exceed the expectations set by the Academy chain of command and successfully pass numerous additional academy specific objectives in order for the recruit to graduate from the basic academy.
Benefits
The expected pay range for this position is $61.02 (Step A) to $77.91 (Step 6) per hour. Placement in the pay range is subject to the applicable collective bargaining agreement.

Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith effort to provide competitive compensation. The actual rate of pay will be determined based on the candidate's qualifications and experience, as well as the needs of the department and the collective bargaining agreement.
