About the role

Deputy Sheriffs are sworn law-enforcement officers responsible for the enforcement of state and local laws, the protection of life and property, and the preservation of the public peace within Boone County.

Responsibilities

• Patrol assigned areas to detect and deter criminal activity.
• Respond to emergency and non-emergency calls for service.
• Conduct preliminary investigations of crimes, accidents, and other incidents.
• Arrest and transport suspects; execute search and arrest warrants.
• Prepare detailed reports and testify in court as required.
• Provide traffic control and enforce traffic laws.
• Assist other law-enforcement agencies as needed.
• Maintain proficiency in the use of firearms and other law-enforcement equipment.
• Perform civil-process duties, including service of subpoenas, summonses, and eviction notices.
• Operate and maintain department-issued vehicles and equipment.

Requirements

• Must be a U.S. citizen.
• Must be at least 21 years of age.
• Must possess a valid Illinois driver’s license.
• Must have a high-school diploma or GED equivalent.
• Must successfully complete the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board (ILETSB) Basic Law Enforcement Academy or be eligible for a waiver.
• Must pass a written examination, physical-agility test, background investigation, psychological evaluation, and medical examination.
• Must be able to work rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays.
• Must reside within a 30-mile radius of Boone County within six months of hire.
