Deputy Sheriff
Under general supervision
Performs skilled work in the operation of a wide variety of heavy motorized construction and maintenance equipment; and other related work as required.
- Operates various types of heavy motorized equipment in the construction and maintenance of varied public works projects
- Dumps and spreads rock, gravel, and plant mix
- Applies road oil, using oil truck, spray bar and hand spraying equipment
- Grades, rakes and tamp road surfaces
- Operates roller to compact road surface
- Operates grader, front-end loader, truck and auxiliary equipment used in street construction and maintenance
- Operates power sweeper to clean city streets
- On a regular schedule, roads, drags, and flushes sewers
- Makes repairs to sewer lines
- Lays and caulks sewer pipe
- Mixes and applies paint for traffic signs and markings
- Installs and maintains a variety of traffic control devices
- Directs one or more helpers as required
- Occasionally acts as the foreman in his absence.

Minimum qualifications & Requirements

- Must have permanent, full-time status as an employee of the City of Richmond by the final filing date.
- Employees working under a probationary appointment may compete in this examination, but must successfully complete their probationary period before they can be appointed from the eligibility list established by this examination.
- Any employee who is promoted to this classification must demonstrate to the Public Services Department’s satisfaction his or her capacity to operate light and heavy equipment as required by the end of the probationary period. If the probationary employee fails to demonstrate this capacity, he or she will be returned to the classification from which he or she was promoted.
- Education/Experience: Any combination of training and experience equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade and two (2) years of experience in operating construction and maintenance equipment.
- Knowledge of and Skill in: The use of the tools and materials commonly used in public works construction and maintenance.
- Ability to: Operate a variety of heavy motorized equipment; follow oral and written directions; supervise helpers.
- Licenses Required: Depending upon assignment, possession of a valid California Class “A” or Class “B” Driver’s License that is required AT DATE OF APPOINTMENT

Performance Examination
This will test the candidate’s ability to operate heavy motorized construction equipment efficiently and safely. This performance examination may evaluate the candidate’s ability to operate such equipment as the street sweeper, tractor/loader and roller (WEIGHTED 100%). A MINIMUM OVERALL SCORE OF 70% IS REQUIRED TO PASS AND BE PLACED ON THE EMPLOYMENT LIST.
Employment List
PROMOTIONAL PROMOTIONAL CANDIDATES: In accordance with the City of Richmond Personnel Rule V, Section 3(c) in a promotional examination, the names of candidates who have qualified shall be placed on a single, unranked employment list. The names of eligible candidates will be arranged in alphabetical order. The employment list will be in effect for two (2) years unless exhausted sooner.
EMPLOYMENT LIST – OPEN A ranking of “A” (Best Qualified), “B” (Better Qualified) or “C” (Qualified) is required to achieve a position on the employment list. The employment list will be in effect for a maximum of two (2) years; however, the list may be canceled, without notice, after six (6) months.
