New York City Public Schools (NYCPS) seeks a Deputy Press Secretary to serve as a media point of contact, manage media relations, and cultivate relationships with news outlets to proactively pitch and frame stories. This role supports high-level media engagement, develops media strategies, and responds to breaking news under the direction of the Press Secretary.
About the Role
The Deputy Press Secretary advises senior NYCPS staff and school-based leaders on media inquiries, supports major announcements and events, and collaborates with the Mayor’s office on press materials. This position maintains 24/7 media availability for urgent requests, including emergencies like school closings.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the day-to-day media point of contact for local and national outlets on NYCPS issues, liaising with senior staff and communicating updates to the Press Secretary.
- Develop expertise across a portfolio of policy issues and prepare materials articulating NYCPS positions for internal and external audiences.
- Draft press releases, statements, talking points, and other communications in a high-pressure, deadline-driven environment.
- Pitch and manage stories for long- and short-term media inquiries, supporting or leading outreach to outlets.
- Build and maintain relationships with reporters, editors, columnists, and media staff across local, national, ethnic, and community news outlets.
- Organize press conferences, set up interviews with NYCPS experts, and source news items from school and district leadership.
- Develop media strategies to shape public perception of NYCPS initiatives and handle sensitive issues.
Requirements
- A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university.
- Two years of professional experience in public relations, journalism, advertising, or a closely related field.
- Experience working in public schools and/or education policy.
- Experience in public relations, including pitching and managing media stories.
Preferred Qualifications
- Understanding of print, TV, and digital media logistics.
- Knowledge of NYCPS’s organization and operating components.
- Skills in planning, staffing, and securing media coverage for public events.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and competing deadlines with attention to detail.
Pay
$100,190 – $110,000 (Internal candidates currently holding comparable or less senior roles will not earn less than their current salary.)
