Deputy Director, National Organizing

Location: New York, New York, United States (hybrid: 2 days per week or 8 days per month in-office)

About the role

The ACLU seeks applicants for the full-time position of Deputy Director of National Organizing in the Organizing Division of the National Political Advocacy Department. The National Political Advocacy Department builds power to achieve an accountable, representative democracy with ambitious goals across Reproductive Freedom, Democracy and Voting Rights, Systemic Equality, Immigration, Trans Justice, Criminal Justice, and other core issues to protect and expand civil rights and civil liberties. The department conducts analysis, develops policy, crafts campaigns, and positions the ACLU for impact across legislative, administrative, and electoral levers. We center principles of equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging in our approach.

Responsibilities

• Plan and assist in organizing-based actions (traditional field and distributed/digital) for nationwide, state, and local campaigns and events.
• Manage senior staff, remote staff, and consultants to ensure program success and professional growth.
• Conceive, revise, and share stories of organizing work, successes, and lessons learned within the ACLU and with volunteers.
• Collaborate with ACLU national departments, state affiliates, national coalitions, academics, researchers, consultants, and allies.
• Work with communications staff to contribute to earned media coverage of grassroots organizing projects.
• Engage in national coalition planning and organizing program execution; advise state affiliates on coalition engagement when requested.
• Track political developments and identify strategic organizing and advocacy opportunities, including multi-state or nationwide solutions.
• Identify and execute grassroots engagement experimentation, data collection, analysis, and results-based recommendations.
• Shape ACLU’s grassroots engagement on key political issues and pending legislation across a multi-issue spectrum.
• Lead the design, planning, and execution of a portfolio of programmatic organizing work (mass mobilization, campus organizing, constituency-based programs).
• Represent the ACLU in senior coalition spaces, coordinating on mobilization, election safeguarding, and movement-aligned efforts.
• Build infrastructure for sustained constituency-based organizing, including ladders of engagement for long-term involvement.
• Surface opportunities for multi-state, nationwide, or movement-wide program approaches.
• Engage in special projects and other duties as assigned; requires flexibility in schedule, location, national travel, and nontraditional hours.

Pay

Annual salary: $196,369 (Level D, based in New York, NY). Salaries are subject to a regional pay adjustment if authorized to work outside the listed location. View pay structure details.
