VCU Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center (Massey) is driven by science and defined by compassion as we work toward a future without cancer. Through community engagement, innovative research, patient care, and education, Massey is discovering, developing, delivering and teaching effective means to prevent, detect, treat and cure cancer and to making these advancements equally available to all. Founded in 1974, Massey was among the earliest cancer centers designated by the National Cancer Institute (NCI). It is the only cancer center in the Richmond metropolitan region and one of only two NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the state, placing it among the top 4 percent of cancer centers in the country. Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Medicine is a premier academic medical center located in the heart of Richmond. Accounting for almost half of VCU's sponsored research, the School of Medicine is internationally recognized for patient care and education.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as a key partner and extension of the Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center Director and provides executive leadership for clinical and operational priorities across the cancer enterprise.
  • Acts as a primary interface between Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center and VCU Health leadership to ensure alignment of cancer center goals with health system strategy, operations, and growth initiatives.
  • Provides strategic oversight of the cancer service line, including efforts to enhance quality, access, patient experience, program development, and clinical growth.
  • Leads and coordinates disease working groups to strengthen multidisciplinary care delivery, clinical research participation, and collaboration across oncology specialties.
  • Oversees the clinical trials enterprise, partnering with clinical, research, and administrative leaders to expand accrual, improve trial activation and performance, and increase patient access to innovative therapies.
  • Works closely with the Director, Associate Directors, Program Leaders, and health system leaders to advance Massey's strategic priorities and achieve institutional goals.
  • Facilitates the integration of clinical care, clinical research, translational science, and population health initiatives across the cancer center and health system.
  • Plays a significant role in the recruitment, retention, and development of outstanding clinical and physician-scientist faculty.
  • Leads key strategic initiatives as assigned by the Director, including development of action plans, performance metrics, and accountability measures for short- and long-term objectives.
  • Collaborates with cancer service line leaders and operational stakeholders to strengthen oncology infrastructure and support programmatic growth across the health system.
  • Partners with the Director in the development of Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG) strategy and renewal efforts, with particular attention to demonstrating excellence and integration across clinical and research programs.
  • Assists in setting the agenda for advisory boards, executive leadership meetings, and other key governance activities; serves in the Director's stead as appropriate.
  • Participates actively in philanthropic and external engagement activities to support the growth and long-term success of Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Required Qualifications

  • Terminal degree (MD or MD/PhD)
  • Demonstrable leadership experience within a cancer center
  • A record of scholarship
  • A record leading teams in formal and informal roles in a cancer center
