Deputy Director for Litigation and Advocacy
About the role
The Deputy Director for Litigation and Advocacy will design, lead, and support the work of learning about state foster care systems, building local connections (including potential pro bono co-counsel), and as appropriate, conducting litigation and follow-on monitoring. They will also design and implement legal strategies in class action cases, support case leadership by the legal staff, work with the Executive Director and legal staff to explore possible new legal strategies and strengthen current strategies, and support the hiring and training of new legal staff.
Responsibilities
- Design, lead, and support the work of learning about state foster care systems, building local connections (including potential pro bono co-counsel), and as appropriate conducting litigation and follow-on monitoring
- Design and implement legal strategies in class action cases
- Support case leadership by the legal staff
- Work with the Executive Director and legal staff to explore possible new legal strategies and strengthen current strategies
- Support the hiring and training of new legal staff
- Collaborate with operations staff in the development of funding opportunities
Requirements
- Experience in designing and leading class action litigation
- Strong strategic thinking and litigation skills
- Ability to build and maintain relationships with local and national law firms
- Experience supervising and supporting a legal team
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills
Qualifications
- J.D. degree from an accredited law school
- Admitted to practice law in at least one state
- At least 7 years of relevant experience in litigation and advocacy

Pay
$160,000 - $190,000 / year
Schedule
This position is hybrid - staff are generally all in our New York City office Tuesdays through Thursdays, with remote work optional Monday/Friday. This position reports to the Executive Director.
