Duties & Responsibilities
- Perform construction inspection functions of traffic signal projects including: approval of underground electrical component placements and procedures; testing and collecting samples of concrete for footings; approval of traffic controls; testing electrical circuits to prevent unsafe signal operations or failures; and installing control components in the controller cabinet.
- Inspect and perform tests on electrical control circuits and cabinets for installation at traffic signals.
- Maintains and keeps in repair traffic control signal and flasher systems including: inspecting and diagnosing failures, performing prevention maintenance, repairing and replacing worn and damaged electrical and electronic components, and replacing, cleaning, and painting signal components.
- Programs signal controllers, master controllers, emergency pre-emption controls, etc., to operate as desired.
- Manage the daily underground excavation notice program (Gopher State One Call) and other locate needs.
- Operates maintenance equipment including: overhead personnel lift vehicle, fork lift, hand and power tools, electrical and electronic test equipment, and tandem dump trucks.
Required License(s)
- Class B drivers license, with air brake endorsement
Essential Job Functions
- Knowledge of the principles, practices, and equipment used in electronic and electrical systems.
- Knowledge of traffic signal systems and control systems.
- Ability to obtain Mn/DOT certification in Signals and Lighting Level I within 12 months of employment.
- Knowledge of work zone safety procedures including appropriate worker attire and behavior and work zone traffic control requirements in the Minnesota Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
- Knowledge of personnel lift vehicle operations, tandem dump truck operations, and fork lift operations.
- Knowledge of electronic and electrical test equipment including power supplies, control systems, oscilloscopes, volt/ohm meters, and cable locators.
- Ability to read electrical and electronic schematics and wiring diagrams.
- Ability to conduct field construction inspections.
- Ability to work in adverse weather conditions.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other engineering and maintenance personnel, contractors, and the general public.
- Skill in the use of electronic and electrical test equipment.
- Skill in the operation and programs of signal controllers.
