About the role
The Department of Justice is seeking a Deputy Attorney General for the Family Division, to serve in the Child Protection Unit. This position may be based in New Castle, Kent, or Sussex County.
Responsibilities
- Primarily represents the Division of Family Services (“DFS”) in their often, complex Dependency and Neglect Custody hearings, Termination of Parental Rights hearings and Child Protection Registry Substantiation hearings before the Family Court.
- Represents DFS in Supreme Court appeals resulting from the various hearings.
- Attends hearings as well as drafts, files and responds to pleadings in the Family Court.
- Participates in case planning meetings with DFS and prepares appellate briefs.
Requirements
- Able to work independently, evaluate cases, meet deadlines, anticipate legal issues, and research accurately and effectively.
- Ability to learn and apply relevant laws, rules of evidence, and court rules.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Related experience in Family Court is preferred.
- Requires some statewide travel to various meetings, trainings and hearings.
Qualifications
- Must be eligible for limited admission pursuant to Supreme Court Rule 55.
Skills
- Strong legal knowledge and experience in Family Court.
- Effective communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple cases and deadlines.
Benefits
This is a Casual/Seasonal position, exempt from the State of Delaware Merit System, currently approved to work up to 37.5 hours per week and is a non-pension eligible position without healthcare and/or other benefits.
Pay
- Pay Grades A12, A14, A16, A18, A20 with corresponding hourly salary ranges.
