Responsibilities
- Serves as spokesperson and representative of the ALD and directorate on research program matters, both internally and externally, as required.
- Acts as the technical lead for scientific and technical quality and risk across the organization, ensuring alignment and integration with strategic priorities.
- Partner with the ALD to develop, coordinate, and articulate an energy strategy for Argonne, aligned with Laboratory and sponsor missions.
- Work cooperatively with Division and Program Directors, Initiative Leads, Sponsor Relationship Managers, and Laboratory Scientists and Engineers to develop a strong knowledge of Laboratory capabilities and key sponsors’ priorities.
- Lead the definition and development of strategic initiatives that expand capabilities and improve impact in support of sponsor mission priorities.
- Steward and manage discretionary investments to execute the S&T strategy with positive outcomes.
- Support lab-level S&T planning activities, including the Annual Lab Plan and companion white papers.
- Support strategy implementation and delivery of outcomes, including sponsor funding for research and S&T impact consistent with Laboratory and sponsor objectives.
- Incubate S&T portfolio expansion opportunities, particularly in new/emerging domains, working collaboratively with key stakeholders to develop and execute new business capture and research implementation strategies.
- Lead and facilitate bi-annual strategy meetings with key stakeholders across the Laboratory.
- Assemble and host an external advisory committee aligned with AET priorities annually.
- Facilitate and sustain key sponsor and partner relationships, including DOE program offices, national laboratories, and industry partners.
- Develop a deep understanding of sponsor missions and support identification of strategic priorities for sponsors, positioning Argonne and AET for maximum impact.
- Mentor and develop future scientific leaders, promoting professional growth and excellence.

Requirements
- Bachelor’s and 15+ years, Master’s and 12+ years, or Doctorate and 10+ years of relevant technology development/management experience with a demonstrated track record of strategy development and resulting impact/outcomes.
- Strong scientific/technical background and demonstrated track record of strategy development/execution in scientific/technical fields.
- Leaders at Argonne are expected to demonstrate a high level of competency, including strategic agility, team building, clear communication, trust-building, and accountability.
- Demonstrated ability to work with multidisciplinary teams including scientists and engineers.
- Demonstrated ability to climb a learning curve in a new scientific or technical discipline to develop and execute a research strategy.
- Knowledge of strategic planning concepts and frameworks, business activities, research methodology, general management, and financial analysis.
- Creative strategic thinker with the ability to advise and influence various levels of management and scientific staff.
- Ability to lead project teams and complex engagements; ability to motivate, develop, and coach teams.
