Department Manager - Mechanical

About the Role

Colliers Engineering & Design is seeking a Department Manager to lead our Buildings Engineering Services team in Rochester, NY. In this role, you will advance the built environment by accelerating the success of our communities, clients, and people. We provide a full range of mechanical engineering services to municipal, commercial, higher education, and public works agencies, partnering with clients to design buildings from the ground up or renovate existing structures to optimize their use.

Our team develops cost-effective building solutions that meet client goals, including new and renovated systems, new building commissioning, and retro-commissioning. We specialize in reducing energy usage while creating comfortable interior environments, emphasizing sustainability and high-performance building design. Our data-driven approach ensures long-term facility operations and client collaboration.

Responsibilities

• Review and manage operations to ensure the quality of technical products.
• Establish effective long-range objectives, goals, and plans for the assigned team.
• Provide technical and management leadership to the team.
• Develop marketing programs in conjunction with discipline goals.
• Advise and assist professionals in other groups when expert knowledge is required.
• Manage activities to ensure adequate profit on all projects.
• Review monthly productivity and labor hour utilization rates, reporting and adjusting as needed.
• Assign projects to staff and schedule work.
• Evaluate employee performance in accordance with company policy.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
• 10+ years of experience in Mechanical Engineering design fields.
• Professional Engineering license in New York with reciprocity in other states.
• Previous industrial and academic project experience preferred.
• Demonstrated effective leadership across large groups of employees.
• Ability to develop and maintain internal and external relationships supporting company success.
• Proven ability to lead effectively, planning, organizing, and managing procedures, protocols, and staff.
• Strong delegation abilities for design and engineering employees.
• Strategic and innovative thinking.
• Ability to read, write, and understand English for job-related communications and interactions.

Pay

$132,000 to $165,000 per year (depending on qualifications).
